Joe Sample
Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample (* 1. February 1939 in Houston , Texas ; † 12. September 2014 ) was an American jazz - musicians , producer , jazz composer , pianist and founding member of fusion jazz -Formation The Crusaders .
Live and act
Joe Sample played with Wilton Felder , Wayne Henderson and Stix Hooper as Nite Hawks in Texas clubs since college . Together they went to the west coast of the USA in the early 1960s and performed in rhythm and blues clubs in Los Angeles and Las Vegas . They released their first albums as The Jazz Crusaders. However, success was a long time coming. It was only when they were renamed The Crusaders in the early 1970s that they achieved their breakthrough without the addition of jazz , but still attached to jazz and with the addition of soul and blues .
Band leader Joe Sample also composed the band's biggest hit. The funky Street Life became a nightclub hit in 1979 (with singer Randy Crawford and guitarist Barry Finnerty ) . Since the 1980s, Joe Sample has mainly worked as a jazz pianist on various projects as a solo artist. The band Crusaders is still around, however. Her last studio album was made in 2003. In Germany, Sample performed together with Till Brönner . With the Swede Nils Landgren he recorded the CD Creole Love Call , which reached first place in the jazz charts in Germany and was awarded the German Jazz Award . In 2006 he released the album Feelin 'Good with Randy Crawford . He has also performed with the singer at various jazz festivals, most recently in 2013 at the Vienna Jazz Festival and at the Carinthian Finkenstein castle ruins . He toured Europe frequently with his Creole Joe Zydeco Band.
Sample also recorded with Donald Byrd , Miles Davis , Ramsey Lewis , Stanley Turrentine , Les McCann , Dennis Rowland and Ella Fitzgerald . He also worked as a studio musician; He can be heard on Living the Blues by Canned Heat and with Diana Ross , Ray Charles and Joni Mitchell , among others . He also plays the piano on Riding with the King , the joint album by Eric Clapton and BB King .
