Nesbert "Stix" Hooper (born August 15, 1938 in Houston ) is an American drummer of modern jazz and fusion jazz , who temporarily led the Crusaders , and music functionary.

Life

Hooper performed as a schoolboy with bands he directed; "The Swingsters", which he founded in 1952, later developed into the "Modern Jazz Sextet" or the "Nite Hawks". Hooper, who served as leader and drummer in this band and the resulting " Jazz Crusaders " or "Crusaders" in 1959 , studied at Texas Southern University . He also worked as a companion to Harold Land , Freddie Hubbard , George Shearing , Grant Green , Larry Carlton , Med Flory and Bobby Hutcherson . A first album under his own name was released in 1979. From 1983 Hooper worked for television to then become Vice President of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences . In these functions, too, he occasionally appeared with musicians such as Randy Crawford , Joe Cocker , Ernestine Anderson and Gerald Wilson .
