Larry Carlton
Eugene "Larry" Carlton (* 2. March 1948 in Torrance , California ) is an American jazz / blues / fusion - guitarist , studio musician , singer and music producer .
Life
Beginnings
Larry Carlton started playing guitar at the age of six. As a teenager he learned to love jazz and took lessons from Joe Pass for a few hours . Through his recommendation he became his successor and guitarist in the "George Shearing Quintet". Tours with The Fifth Dimension , The Partridge Family and numerous recordings in advertising and pop music followed.
In 1968 Carlton brought out his first solo album With a Little Help from My Friends , which was still heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery . In addition to Wes Montgomery, his main influences include BB King , Barney Kessel , Joe Pass, Tony Mottola , John Coltrane and Albert King .
Studio activity
The jazz / fusion band The Crusaders became aware of him in 1970 through his diverse studio activities and his special sound (on a Gibson ES-335 , which later earned him the nickname "Mr. 335", and a mesa / boogie guitar amplifier ) . Carlton became a member of the group and toured with them, recording all records with them until 1977. In his weddings, Carlton played around 50 recording sessions per month, including a. for Joni Mitchell (e.g. 1976 on Hejira ), Sammy Davis Jr. , Herb Alpert , Quincy Jones , Paul Anka , Michael Jackson , John Lennon , Jerry García , Dolly Parton and Steely Dan .
Larry Carlton's guitar solo in Kid Charlemagne (1976) ranks 80th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 best guitar songs.
Solo career
Since 1976, Carlton has focused on his solo career, which includes several Grammy Awards as well as being honored on the Hollywood Rock Walk. For the 1981 album Sleepwalk , Carlton used Gibson and Valley Arts - Stratocaster models, which had a brighter and harder sound than the ES-335 and became his new favorite instruments. For several years he has been playing a Gibson ES-335 again. In 2005, Gibson launched the ES-335LC, a Larry Carlton Signature model.
After a serious neck injury in 1988, which he sustained as an uninvolved victim in a shooting outside the door of his private studio "Room 335" in Burbank , Carlton turned to the field of smooth jazz and produced recordings for mainly Christian artists, among others. a. for his then wife Michele Pillar.
In 1997, Carlton Lee replaced Ritenour as guitarist for the smooth jazz and fusion group Fourplay . At the beginning of 2010 the band announced on their homepage that Carlton had left Fourplay after 12 years and 6 albums together to concentrate on his solo career. Chuck Loeb took his place at Fourplay .
In recent years, Larry Carlton has returned to the blues , which has greatly influenced his playing. His collaboration with guitarist Steve Lukather on the album No Substitutions earned him another Grammy. In 2007 Larry Carlton released a live recording from Blue Note Tokyo with blues guitarist Robben Ford .
