Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway (born December 16, 1968 in Chicago as Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway ) is an American jazz , R&B and gospel singer .

Life

Lalah Hathaway was born on December 16, 1968 to Donny Hathaway . In 1979 she became a half-orphan through her father's suicide . After graduating from high school, she studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston , Massachusetts . In 1989, while still a student, she got her first record deal with Virgin Records and released her first album in 1990, which reached number 191 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts. The albums Night & Day (1991) and A Moment (1994) followed. She then left Virgin Records and worked in the following years, for example, with Mary J. Blige and Marcus Miller . In 1999, Hathaway signed a new contract with GRP Records that brought her to work with Joe Sample . The joint album The Song Lives On rose to number 2 on the jazz charts and was awarded the Billboard Jazz Award in 1999. In 2004 the album Outrun the Sky followed , and in 2007 Lalah Hathaway moved to Stax Records . After further publications, Hathaway won a Grammy in the category Best R&B Performance in 2014 with Snarky Puppy for her interpretation of "Something" . She won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance three times in a row from 2015 to 2017 (2015 together with the Robert Glasper Experiment ).
