Snarky Puppy is an American musician collective in the fusion / jazz rock genre .
history
In 2004 Michael League founded "Snarky Puppy" together with musician friends from the University of North Texas in Denton , Texas . The group has about 25 members who appear in changing line-ups around the world. The troupe is led by its founder, the bassist, composer and producer Michael League .
Michael League said: “When we started, it wasn't meant to be serious: At first it was just a band of friends and me, where we read sheet music from pieces I was writing at the time or played the music. Soon we made a small record and booked a small tour to Washington DC on our own. I think the first seven years we hardly made any progress, it was really tough, bit by bit it got better, in the sense of bigger. "
With the albums Tell Your Friends and groundUp , Snarky Puppy gained a larger fan base. But with the album We Like it Here - recorded in front of a studio audience in Utrecht - the group gained worldwide attention through the distribution of the concert recording on YouTube. In this concert (also released on DVD) the audience was equipped with headphones and soundproofed.
In 2014 the group received the Grammy Award for the best R&B performance for the song Something with singer Lalah Hathaway . From 2015 to 2017, they were voted the best jazz band in Down Beat's Readers Poll .
In 2016, Snarky Puppy won the Grammy together with the Metropole Orkest from the Netherlands for the best contemporary instrumental album for the album Sylva - a hypnotic work with the main theme "Forest" (stylistically located between jazz rock , James Bond soundtrack and Portishead .)
At the 2017 Grammy Awards , Snarky Puppy received the award for best contemporary instrumental album for Culcha Vulcha .
