General

There were three changes to the categories this year. The genre hard rock was assigned to the field of rock music. Before it was metal in a category that is now a class of its own. In cinematic musical works, a distinction is no longer made between short and long video, but between music video and music film, i.e. between films accompanying individual pieces of music and longer films with over 50% music. And finally the category with music from American roots (blues, folk, bluegrass, etc.) was expanded to include a songwriter award ( Best American Roots Song ).

Four awards were also given for old master Paul McCartney's works, in addition to three less well-known categories also for the rock song of the year. Justin Timberlake also had seven nominations before , he was awarded three times, as often as the producer of the year Pharrell Williams .
