Tame Impala is an Australian psychedelic rock project directed by Kevin Parker. Parker writes and sings the songs and also plays all the instruments himself in the studio; Members of the band Pond accompany him at concerts .

history

The beginnings of Tame Impala go back to the school days of Kevin Parker and Dom Simper, who made music together for the first time at the age of 13. Kevin Parker was part of a circle of friends whose members, with changing line- ups , produced bands such as The Dee Dee Dums , GUM , Mink Mussel Creek , Pond , Space Lime Peacock , Rabbit Island and Tame Impala . Everyone played more or less in every band. After the success of the Dee Dee Dums as a student band, the name changed to Tame Impala in 2007 , named after the African species of antelope. The third member of the band was the drummer Jay Watson. Like many bands at the time, they stopped self-made recordings on MySpace and were discovered there by the indie label Modular , which they signed. In 2008 a first EP was released under the band name, which brought them first attention. They were also discovered by international music managers and hired as opening act for the Australia tour by artists such as MGMT and the Black Keys .

In May 2010 Tame Impala released the debut album Innerspeaker . So they made it straight to number 4 on the Australian album charts. They were also able to expand their success to Europe and the USA: They also made it into the album charts in Belgium and the Netherlands and the Heatseekers charts in the USA. They were nominated four times at the ARIA Awards 2010.

In 2012 Tame Impala completed the second album Lonerism . Like the EP and the debut album, it was essentially single-handedly produced by Parker. This was followed by an extensive tour through Europe and the USA. In the meantime Nick Allbrook and later Julien Barbagallo had been recorded for the performances, so that the band performed live with five people. In October of that year the LP was released and again reached number 4 in the charts in her home country and number 14 in Great Britain. At the ARIA Awards 2013 they were nominated again several times and could win three awards: for best band and for Lonerism as album of the year and as best rock album.

In 2015, the psych-pop project Tame Impala released the third album Currents . The total work of art of disco tracks and synth ballads was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and was also a great commercial success.

Kevin Parker also works as a producer. He produced the debut album of his girlfriend at the time, Melody Prochet, to which he also contributed guitar sounds. Parker now works as a collaborator with megastars such as Kanye West , Lady Gaga , Travis Scott and Mick Jagger ; it has already been covered by Rihanna .

Parker's fourth album The Slow Rush was released on February 14, 2020 . In terms of sound aesthetics, it follows on from the previous album, shimmering keyboards and the typical falsetto singing over the drums as well as psychedelic alienation effects can be heard. In the lyrics, Parker reflects on his new star status, he sings about regret and remorse, introducing melancholy turns. The rock musician Parker also plays everything himself on the current album on analog instruments, especially with real drum kits, and thus gives the sound physicality, reverberation in space and vehemence.
