ARIA Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ARIA Awards are an annual award by the Australian Recording Industry Association to local musicians. They are the most important music award in Australia.

background

The first edition of the ARIA Awards took place on March 2, 1987. The Australian Music Industry Association, ARIA , introduced the award to recognize “outstanding and innovative achievements in all genres of Australian music”. The first award ceremony took place in Sydney at the Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in front of 500 invited guests from the music industry. The event was moderated by Sir Elton John , but it only consisted of the award ceremony without musicians appearing. From 1990 there was also live music. The hour-long presentation of the 20 winners was recorded but not televised. It stayed that way for the first five years. There was a television broadcast only from 1992, but the event moved once to Melbourne . Before and after it took place at various venues in Sydney. Initially, a decision was made in March about the best performers and works of the previous year, in 1995 the award ceremony was postponed to October (relevant publication period ends in September).

As with comparable national music awards, there are main awards for the best releases (album, single and song) and the best performers (band, male and female musicians, new talent). In addition, awards for publications in various genres (country, jazz, indigenous music, etc.) as well as for the best producer and the best technician, the best video and the best cover design. The winners of the general categories are chosen by over 1000 representatives from the music industry. A committee made up of representatives of the record companies united in the ARIA appoints journalists, employees of the record industry, music agents, concert organizers and other musicians who are given permanent voting rights. Their names will not be made public. Previous winners can also take part in the vote. For the genre-specific categories there are separate committees with up to 100 members (“judging schools”) that decide on the prizes. Until 2009 there were also two other categories, best-selling single and best-selling album, in which the certified sales of the previous year alone were decisive. Since 2010 there have also been public votes in some categories.

The awards started with 20 categories but have changed over the years.

  • A Hall of Fame was introduced as early as 1988 and an Outstanding Achievement Award was introduced for special achievements, which are, however, given irregularly. A separate ARIA Board decides on these special awards.
  • The Breakthrough Artist has existed since 1989 for artists who have made their breakthrough with a single or an album. Until 1998 the award was parallel to the award for the best new talent, after that it was the sole “newcomer” award and from 2010 there was no longer any distinction between album and single and only one award was given.
  • The genres have been expanded again and again and adapted to the musical development. A distinction was made between pop, rock and heavy metal; world music and dance were introduced in the mid-1990s and urban music (R&B, hip-hop, soul, funk, reggae and dancehall) was introduced in 2004.
  • Until 2009 the awards were reserved exclusively for Australian musicians, in 2010 an internet vote was carried out on the most popular Australian and international musicians. The Best International Artist category has existed since 2012 and is decided on by internet voting.
  • In 2010, the two categories, which were exclusively determined by sales, were abolished (best-selling single / best-selling album), and Internet voting was used for the first time. Since 2012, in addition to the best international artists, the best video, the best Australian live act and the song of the year have been decided as audience awards through public voting on the Internet.

The most successful Australian artists are the bands Silverchair and Powderfinger as well as John Farnham and Kylie Minogue , each with over 40 nominations and 17 or more awards (as of 2018).
