Alex Lloyd
Alex Stewart Lloyd (born December 28, 1984 in Manchester ) is a British racing driver . In 2007 he won the Indy Pro Series championship . From 2008 to 2011 he took part in several races in the IndyCar Series .
Career
Lloyd began his motorsport career in karting in 1998 , where he was active until 1999. In 2000 he made his first experience in Formula racing when he test drives in a Formula Ford graduated racing cars. In 2001 he competed for the first time in Formula Ford and he was third in the British Formula Ford winter championship. He also competed in the European Formula Ford and the Formula Ford Festival. In 2002 he switched to the British Formula Renault and finished ninth in the overall standings with a podium finish. After finishing third overall in the Formula Renault 2.0 Fran-Am winter championship in winter , he was runner-up behind Lewis Hamilton in 2003 in the British Formula Renault with two wins . He also received the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award that season . His biggest competitor for this award, later Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, was not nominated because of an existing McLaren sponsorship agreement.
After initially not finding a racing cockpit, he switched to the fourth race in the Superfund Euro Formula 3000 in 2004 . Lloyd won one race and finished sixth overall at the end of the season. He was also able to test a McLaren Formula 1 racing car as a prize for winning the award . 2005 Lloyd took only sporadically in races in part, and drove a race in the World Series by Renault and two races in the Italian Formula 3000 , the successor series of the Euro Formula 3000 for the 2005/2006 season of the A1 Grand Prix was awarded Lloyd a contract with the British A1 team , but was not used.
Then Lloyd moved to North America for the Indy Pro Series at AFS Racing . He won two races and finished seventh overall at the end of the season. In 2007 Lloyd stayed in this championship and started for Sam Schmidt Motorsports . He dominated the season and won eight of 16 races. In the end, he secured the championship title by a large margin over Hideki Muto . He set records for the most wins in a row (5), most wins in a season (8), most wins in total (10) and most points (652) in a season. He is also the only racing driver to have won a race on both the oval and the infield track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway .
In 2008 , Lloyd was accepted by Chip Ganassi Racing in their sponsorship program. Together with Rahal Letterman Racing he received a cockpit for the Indianapolis 500 . He retired with a serious accident and was 25. In the further course of the season he did not contest any other races in the IndyCar Series . In 2009 he returned to the Indianapolis 500. This time his team cooperated with Sam Schmidt Motorsports and Lloyd finished the race in 13th place. In the last race of the season he started for Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing and finished the season finale in eighth place. In the overall ranking he finished 30th. He also competed in a total of four races in the Grand-Am Sports Car Series from 2007 to 2009 .
In 2010 , Lloyd took part in the IndyCar Series for Dale Coyne Racing . He first came into focus in Long Beach when he tried to avoid being lapped by the leading group. While the leader Ryan Hunter-Reay passed Lloyd after a few laps, the runner-up Justin Wilson damaged his front wing while attempting to lap it. At the Indianapolis 500, he finished third. However, since he had overtaken Marco Andretti during a caution period, he was subsequently relegated to fourth place, which he had previously occupied. At the end of the season he finished 16th overall. In addition, although he had previously started three races in the IndyCar Series, he received the award for the best newcomer. In 2011 , Lloyd did not receive a cockpit for a full season. For Dale Coyne Racing he took part in all oval races. At the end of the season he was in 27th place overall.
