Justin Wilson (born July 31, 1978 in Sheffield , Yorkshire , † August 24, 2015 in Allentown , Pennsylvania , USA ) was a British automobile racing driver .
In 2001 he won the International Formula 3000 Championship . After he was active in Formula 1 in 2003 , he drove in the Champ Car Series from 2004 to 2007 and won the runner-up twice. From 2008 to 2015 he started in the IndyCar Series .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport
Wilson began his motorsport career in karting in 1987 at the age of nine . He won some races and club championships. In 1994 he moved into the single-seater racing and immediately won the championship title in the Formula Vauxhall -Junioren Winter Championship. In 1995 he started in the regular Formula Vauxhall Junior Championship and finished the season in third. A year later he switched to Formula Vauxhall and finished second with a win. While his team-mate Luciano Burti won the Formula Vauxhall championship title in 1997, Wilson finished fourth overall with two wins. In 1998 he finally won the newly created Formula Palmer Audi with a total of 9 victories of the season from 17 races.
Formula 3000
In 1999 , Wilson moved to the international Formula 3000 championship and was Gonzalo Rodríguez's teammate on the Belgian team Astromega . Wilson did not keep up in his first Formula 3000 season with his teammate, who died in an accident in Laguna Seca shortly before the end of the season , and was 20th overall with two sixth places as the best results.
In 2000 , Wilson switched to Nordic Racing and achieved his first podium finish in Formula 3000 in third place in the second race of the season at Silverstone. Finally, he finished the season with a second place as the best result in fifth place overall. 2001 Wilson was with three wins and a new record number of 71 points champion of the Formula 3000. He had a clear lead on his pursuers Mark Webber and his teammate Tomáš Enge , who had each achieved 39 points. In addition, with ten podium placements, he also set a new record for podium positions. He also took part in a race in the FIA GT Championship .
formula 1
In the winter of 2001, Wilson tried to find a cockpit in Formula 1 . In test drives for the Jordan Grand Prix , he convinced as the fastest driver. In the end, the second fastest pilot Takuma Satō received the Jordan cockpit. The advantage of Satōs was that he was supported by Jordan's engine partner Honda and also had more experience as a test driver. After initially considering switching to the Champ Car series, he switched to the World Series by Nissan . Starting for Racing Engineering , he finished fourth in the overall standings with two wins and a further six podium finishes. He was defeated by his teammate Franck Montagny , who won the runner-up.
Wilson almost was allowed to contest his first Grand Prix as a replacement for Alex Yoong at Minardi in the 2002 Formula 1 World Championship . However, due to his size of 1.91 m, the racing driver was too big for the Minardi cockpit and had to forego the premature change. At the end of 2002 he was finally hired by Formula 1 team boss Paul Stoddart as a Minardi driver for 2003 . Wilson had to pay around 5 million euros for his cockpit . He received the sum required for his commitment through the sale of investment shares in his person. In his second race, the Malaysian Grand Prix , Wilson was flown to hospital after an incident involving the HANS system . He had problems with his sitting position and had to give up the race with pain in his shoulders.
Although Wilson was under contract with Minardi until 2005, he left the team after eleven races and started at the German Grand Prix for Jaguar Racing . The change came because Jaguar was anything but satisfied with the previous driver Antonio Pizzonia . At Jaguar he was given the cockpit alongside his former Formula 3000 rival Webber. In the five races he completed for Jaguar Racing, he scored his only point in Formula 1 in eighth place at the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis . His first season he finished 20th in the world championship. Jaguar wanted to sign him for the 2004 season , but this failed because of the lack of sponsorship from Wilson. He lost his cockpit to Christian Klien , who brought with him a financially strong sponsor in Red Bull . Despite his three-year contract with Minardi, Wilson did not regret moving to Jaguar even after his engagement ended, as his financial resources had been used up after the 2003 season and he would no longer have been able to finance the Minardi cockpit.
Champ Car Series
After he had not received a test driver cockpit for the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship, Wilson switched to the North American Champ Car series, in which he competed for Conquest Racing in 2004 . He finished his debut season with a fourth place as the best result in eleventh place overall. He was also the second best newcomer behind AJ Allmendinger . He also took part in a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 2004 and made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In 2005 , Wilson switched to RuSPORT and became Allmendinger's teammate. Wilson immediately prevailed against his teammate within the team and won his first champ car race in the Streets of Toronto . With another victory in Mexico City , he finished third in the championship behind the two Newman / Haas drivers Sébastien Bourdais and Oriol Servià at the end of the season .
2006 Wilson improved to second overall behind Bourdais. This time he took a win in Edmonton and finished five races in second place. He had his teammates Allmendinger, who had left the team after four races, and Cristiano da Matta and Ryan Briscoe , who then drove as replacements for Allmendinger, under control. In the penultimate race in Surfers Paradise , Wilson did not start because of a broken hand.
In 2007 Wilson got a new teammate in Alex Tagliani . However, nothing changes in the internal team ranking. Wilson drove another Champ Car victory in Assen in the Netherlands and only had to admit defeat to Bourdais at the end of the season. Wilson also took part in two races in the Rolex Sports Car Series .
IndyCar Series
For the 2008 Champ Car season, Wilson had already signed a contract with Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing as the successor to Bourdais . After the reunification of the Champ Car Series with the IndyCar Series , the racing driver kept his cockpit for the 2008 season , as his team also competed in the IndyCar Series. As a team-mate of Graham Rahal , after finishing third in Edmonton for the first time on the podium, he scored his first victory in the IndyCar Series in Detroit . At the end of the season he finished 11th overall, ahead of Rahal, who was 17th. Behind Hideki Mutoh , he was the second best newcomer this season. As in the previous year, he also started a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series.
For the 2009 season , Wilson lost his Newman / Haas / Lanigan cockpit and moved to Dale Coyne Racing , a team that was usually placed at the bottom of the field. However, Wilson showed right from the first race that he got along well with the car and finished the race in third place, which was also the best result in the history of his team. In Watkins Glen Wilson also managed to achieve the first victory for Dale Coyne Racing. At the end of the season he finished ninth in the overall ranking.
In 2010 Wilson surprisingly switched to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing together with his sponsor Z-Line . With two second places, which he achieved on circuits, as the best results, he finished eleventh in the drivers' standings. In the Rolex Sports Car Series, Wilson finished second in the 24-hour race of Daytona this year, along with his team-mates Max Papis , Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas . In the 2011 season , Wilson started again for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing in the IndyCar Series. In the first race he finished in tenth place. However, Wilson suffered a small wrist fracture on contact, but did not have to pause a race because of it. During training for the race in Lexington , Wilson had an accident in which he suffered a compression fracture of the fifth vertebra . Wilson came off the track at the end of the first corner, was excavated by a bump and hit the ground, causing the break. Wilson was out until the end of the season. He was represented by several racing drivers. At the end of the season he was in fifth place as the best result in 24th place overall. Wilson also took part in the Daytona 24-hour race again before the season.
For the IndyCar Series season 2012 Wilson returned to Dale Coyne Racing. Wilson took his first win of the season at the Firestone 550 in Fort Worth and won for the first time in his career on an oval course . At the end of the season he was in 15th place overall. Within the team he prevailed against James Jakes . In addition, Wilson won the Daytona 24-hour race for Michael Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian , starting with his teammates AJ Allmendinger, Oswaldo Negri and John Pew . 2013 Wilson stayed with Dale Coyne Racing in the IndyCar Series. After two top 10 finishes, he was third on the podium at the third race in Long Beach . He repeated this result in the first race in Detroit , which his teammate Mike Conway won. At the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma he achieved his best result of the season to date with a second place. In the next race in Baltimore , his brother Stefan was his teammate. The two formed the first pair of brothers in a racing team in the IndyCar Series. It was also the first time that the two brothers were active in a racing series at the same time. In Houston , he achieved another podium finish in the third last race of the season. At the last race, the MAVTV 500 , Wilson was involved in a serious accident. His out of control vehicle was hit by Tristan Vautier . Wilson suffered a fractured pelvis in the accident. He finished the season in sixth place overall. He finished in the top 10 in 13 of 19 races. Wilson also took part in six races in the Rolex Sports Car Series for Michael Shank Racing. He reached the podium twice in the DP rankings.
In 2014 , Wilson returned to the cockpit after his injury. A fourth place was his best result while his teammate Carlos Huertas won a race. Internally, however, Wilson prevailed with 395 to 314 points and ended the season in 15th place in the drivers' standings. He also contested two races for Michael Shank Racing in the newly founded United SportsCar Championship (USCC).
Although Wilson was under contract with Dale Coyne Racing for the 2015 IndyCar Series , he lost his cockpit there. He moved to Andretti Autosport , where he received a part-time cockpit. Wilson also took part in an FIA Formula E Championship race for Andretti Autosport . In the third last race of the season in Lexington , he achieved a podium finish with a second place.
At the next race, the ABC Supply 500 on August 23, 2015 at Pocono Raceway , Wilson was hit in the head by a flying part of the nose of Sage Karam's car and flown to hospital with severe head injuries. There he succumbed to his injuries a day later. This made him the first IndyCar driver to be killed in an accident since Dan Wheldon's death on October 16, 2011.
