Tomáš Enge (born September 11, 1976 in Liberec ) is a Czech automobile racing driver .
Career
After Enge was active in karting in 1991 , he competed in the Czech Ford Fiesta Cup from 1992 to 1994 . In 1995, the Czech joined the Formula racing and went into the German Formula Ford at the start. After Enge was third overall in his debut season, he won the championship title of this series in the 1996 season. In 1997, Enge switched to the German Formula 3 championship , in which he finished twelfth overall as a team-mate of the champion Nick Heidfeld . In the following season he played the first half of the season again in the German Formula 3 championship.
The second half of the season took narrowness of the 1998 season of Formula 3000 in part. He replaced the British Dino Morelli in the Italian Auto Sport Racing team. In the last race at the Nürburgring he scored points for the first time and finally finished 22nd overall. In 1999 he switched to the WRT Fina team and finished eleventh in the overall standings with a podium finish. In 2000 , Enge contested his third season in Formula 3000 for the MySap.com team . With a victory at the Hockenheimring , Enge finished sixth overall. In his fourth season, Enge started in 2001 as Justin Wilson's teammate for Coca-Cola Nordic Racing . With victories in Barcelona and at the Nürburgring, he finished third overall with one race to go. Since Enge could no longer participate in the last race due to his move to Formula 1 , he stayed in third place overall.
After Enge was a Formula 1 test driver at the Jordan Grand Prix in 1999 and 2000 , he made his debut as a Formula 1 racing driver at the Italian Grand Prix in 2001 . He was signed by Prost Grand Prix to replace Luciano Burti , who was injured at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps , and competed in the last three Grands Prix of the season. He achieved his best result in his first race in which he was twelfth. Enge scored no points in his Formula 1 career, which ended after these three races.
After his brief ascent into Formula 1, Enge returned to Formula 3000 in 2002 and started his fifth season in Formula 3000 as a driver for Arden Team Russia . As one of the favorites to win the title, he won the races in Zeltweg , Silverstone , Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours and Budapest and was one point behind the leader Sébastien Bourdais in second place in the overall standings before the decisive race weekend in Monza . On the day before the last race of the season, it was announced that Enge tested positive for cannabis in the doping test after his victory in Budapest . Enge denied the use of prohibited substances and was allowed to start the race in Monza with reservations. Enge finished second behind his team mate Björn Werdenheim and thus led the overall standings from Bourdais. At the following hearing before the World Motor Sport Council in Paris, Enge was stripped of his victory in Budapest. He lost the lead in the overall standings to Bourdais and was again third in the overall standings behind the Frenchman and Giorgio Pantano .
In 2003, Enge did not get a cockpit in Formula 3000 and competed in the GTS class of the American Le Mans Series and also won the GTS class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans .
In 2004 , Enge returned to Formula 3000 and started his sixth season for the German Ma-Con Engineering team . Enge couldn't win a race and finished fourth in the overall standings. He also took part again in the 24-hour race at Le Mans , where he finished fourth in the GTS class this year. The Czech also made his debut in the IndyCar Series for Patrick Racing .
In 2005 , Enge moved to the IndyCar Series, in which he finished 16th overall. In winter, Enge competed for his home country, the Czech Republic, in the 2005/2006 A1GP season . He won a race and finished twelfth overall. In the 2006 season , Enge again took part in a race in the IndyCar Series, but then switched to the GT1 class of the American Le Mans Series, in which he finished third. In addition, Enge finished second in the GT1 class at the Le Mans 24-hour race.
In the 2006/2007 A1GP season , Enge started again for the Czech Republic and finished twelfth overall. In the further course of the season, Enge started in various series, such as the American Le Mans Series or the FIA GT Championship. He also took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race again, this time finishing fourth in the GT1 class. At the ALMS race in Saint Petersburg (Florida) on March 31, 2007, Enge was seriously injured when he drove into a concrete wall at high speed. His car was badly damaged on the driver's side and caught fire. In the accident, his left elbow was shattered, several ribs and an ankle were broken, and one lung was injured.
In 2008, Enge was active in the A1GP for half a season . He was also runner-up in the GT1 class together with Antonio García in the 2008 Le Mans Series season . His previous activities in sports car racing at Prodrive, Aston Martin and, in particular, his involvement in the Czech touring car championship ICTCC for Antonín Charouz enabled the testing of a Le Mans prototype with an Aston Martin engine by the Charouz Racing team , which he later joined his first use in the 24-hour race of Le Mans in the LMP1 class. There he finished ninth overall with Jan Charouz and Stefan Mücke . During the winter break for the 2009 Le Mans Series season , Aston Martin Racing, together with Prodrive and Charouz, continued the program as a works team. Enge now drove a Lola-Aston Martin LMP1 together with Mücke and Charouz . In the 24-hour race of Le Mans, which is not part of the championship, he finished fourth in the LMP1 class. In the Le Mans Series, the driver trio finished the season as champions of the most powerful prototype category in the series, finishing two races as overall winners and three more of the five championship races on the podium.
In 2012 Enge was suspended for 18 months for doping.
