Jan Charouz (2011)

Jan Charouz (born July 17, 1987 in Prague ) is a Czech racing driver and the son of racing driver Antonín Charouz . He was champion of the F3000 International Masters in 2006 and of the Le Mans Series in 2009 . He drove in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2010 and 2011 .

Career

Charouz began his motorsport career at the age of seven in karting , in which he was active until 2002. In 2003 he moved into the single-seater racing in the German Formula BMW . After he couldn't get any points in his first season, he finished 21st overall in 2004. In 2005 he switched to the Italian Formula 3000 , in which he finished eleventh overall. After taking part in two races in the A1 Grand Prix series in winter , he competed in the 2006 F3000 International Masters , the predecessor series of the international Formula Masters , and won the championship title with two victories. He also competed in two races in the Renault Mégane Eurocup and the FIA GT Championship .

After taking part in two races of the A1GP series again in winter, he initially turned his back on formula racing. His studies at Regent's College were decisive for the decision . In 2007 he decided on the Le Mans Series , in which he had to complete significantly fewer championship runs than sprint races and was therefore able to invest more time in his training. He also commented on his motives in 2009:

“I think that the LMP1s are the best cars after the F1 single-seaters and that's another reason why I chose endurance. All the young drivers dream of Formula 1, but the budget necessary is too high for someone from a small country like the Czech Republic. "

His father Antonín, for whose team he already drove in the Italian Formula 3000, planned to enter prototype racing for the 2007 season . Charouz and Stefan Mücke now shared a Le Mans prototype with which they finished eighth overall at the end of the year. He also finished eighth in the Le Mans 24-hour race . In 2008 Charouz improved to fifth place overall in the Le Mans Series. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year he was only ninth. After Charouz Racing Systems made contact with Aston Martin Racing and Prodrive in the 2008 season with the use of an Aston Martin engine , the Czech was accepted into the Aston Martin works team in 2009. With Mücke and compatriot Tomáš Enge , he finished his third year in the Le Mans Series and won the championship with two victories. He also achieved his best result so far in fourth at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

After completing his master's degree , Charouz returned to formula racing in 2010 and competed in the Formula Renault 3.5 for P1 Motorsport as Walter Grubmüller's teammate . In the second race, he finished second, but was disqualified because he had less than the required three liters of petrol in the tank at Parc Fermé. He was unable to match this performance as the season progressed and two seventh places were his best results. Charouz, who had to take a break from a race weekend due to injury, finished 18th overall at the end of the season. Parallel to his involvement in Formula Renault 3.5, he competed in the 2010 season for his father's team in the Auto GP , in which he had already started in 2005, when the series was called Italian Formula 3000. As the best driver of his team, he finished fourth in the overall ranking at the end of the season. He was also a test driver for the Renault Formula 1 team in the 2010 season . In 2011 Charouz completed the second season in Formula Renault 3.5 for his father's team. At the end of the season he finished 25th overall, while his teammate Brendon Hartley was 7th. After the season, Charouz took part for Carlin in the 2011 GP2 Final and finished 25th. In 2011 Charouz was again a Formula 1 test driver at Renault. In this role he completed a test day for Renault. He also tested for HRT and took part in the first free practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix for this team .
