His racing team Red Bull Racing also managed to defend the constructors' title prematurely with Mark Webber as the second driver.
Changes in 2011
Racetracks
According to the FIA's racing calendar, a total of 20 races should be held for the first time in the 2011 season. The Indian Grand Prix on the Buddh International Circuit was new . The German Grand Prix switched from the Hockenheimring to the Nürburgring according to the annual rotation .
The Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit should be driven again on the original and shorter track variant. However, it was canceled three weeks before the race due to political unrest in the country. At its meeting on June 3, 2011, the FIA initially set October 30, 2011 as an alternative date, but a week later the Chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, Zayed Rasched al-Zayani, finally canceled the Bahrain Grand Prix for 2011. The racing calendar now comprised only 19 events.
Regulations
The minimum weight of the vehicles has been increased to 640 kg. Aerodynamic aids (such as the F-slot ) that can be manually operated or activated by the driver are prohibited from the 2011 season. However, an adjustable rear wing , the Drag Reduction System (DRS), is permitted. It may be flatter by the driver if the distance to the driver ahead is less than one second in front of the specified route sections. Outside of the race, this aid is allowed anywhere on the track, unless it has been banned by the FIA due to safety concerns in high-risk passages such as the Eau Rouge in Spa-Francorchamps. This should enable more overtaking maneuvers and a top speed up to 15 km / h higher. This option is deactivated when the rear light is switched on (“wet track”). In addition, a transmission has to be used on five instead of four race weekends.
After FOTA agreed on a voluntary waiver of KERS for the previous season , the official FIA statutes have been in effect again since 2011. This means that KERS can be used by the teams. The old 107 percent rule also returned to the regulations. Drivers who are more than seven percent slower in qualifying than the fastest in the first qualifying segment (Q1) are not allowed to take part in the race. However, there is the possibility that under special circumstances a start will still be approved.
On December 10, 2010, Paragraph 39.1 was deleted from the FIA regulations. So that was since 2003 existing team orders ban tilted. However, Section 151.c still exists, prohibiting actions that damage the image of the sport. This leaves a lot of room for interpretation in terms of stable orders, which has also been criticized. In the 2010 season , Ferrari was fined for a stall order at the German Grand Prix .
The safety car rules were modified again for the 2011 season. In order to make it easier for the safety car to “catch” the field, the drivers had to reduce their speed after calling the safety car phase last season so that their lap time increased by at least 40 percent. This speed limit now applies to two laps instead of one. The traffic light at the end of the pit lane is only switched to red when the race is interrupted. Until now, the traffic light was switched to red in every safety car phase when the field drove past the pit lane over the start-finish straight. In addition, drivers who pit in the safety car phase have to have their tires changed. An exception is the case when the start-finish straight is blocked and the race management decides to let the safety car and the driver field drive through the pit lane.
In order to prevent an aerodynamic effect of the exhaust gases on the diffuser, a three-stage program is allowed
- engine management between qualifying and the race has not been changed since the European Grand Prix ,
- "Hot" exhaust gases have not flowed into the diffuser since the Grand Prix of Great Britain (no fuel may be injected),
- from 2012 the diffuser will not be exposed to “cold” exhaust gases.
Teams
Lotus terminated the contract with Cosworth as an engine supplier, which was valid until 2012, at the end of 2010 and has been receiving engines from Renault since the 2011 season. The Russian sports car manufacturer Marussia took over large shares in Virgin. The company became the title sponsor in 2011 and the team was renamed Marussia Virgin Racing . The Luxembourg investment group Genii Capital has taken over the remaining shares in the Renault F1 Team from the French car manufacturer Renault and is now the sole owner of the racing team. In addition, Group Lotus became the title sponsor, whereupon the team was renamed Lotus Renault GP .
At the beginning of 2010 the FIA announced the starting place for a 13th Formula 1 team again. Epsilon Euskadi , Durango and Stefan Grand Prix competed for this starting place . In addition, the ART Grand Prix and the Cypher Group had applied, but they later withdrew their applications. In July it became known that the former Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve had also submitted an application that he was pursuing together with Durango. In September, however, the FIA decided against expanding the starting field.
During the season leading up to the British Grand Prix , Ferrari changed its team name from Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro back to Scuderia Ferrari . The brand of cigarettes was removed from the name after protests by anti-tobacco organizations.
driver
Nick Heidfeld left Sauber after the 2010 season and was initially without a cockpit for the 2011 season. After Renault driver Robert Kubica was seriously injured in a rally and had to be out for a long time, the racing team signed Heidfeld as a substitute. In the second half of the season, Heidfeld was finally replaced by Bruno Senna . Vitantonio Liuzzi also changed teams and took part in Formula 1 for HRT in 2011 . Liuzzi originally had a contract with his former racing team Force India . However, the contract was terminated before the season.
A total of three drivers switched from the GP2 series to Formula 1. Pastor Maldonado , who won the GP2 series championship title for the Rapax team in 2010, was signed by Williams . Sergio Pérez , runner-up in the GP2 series, switched to Sauber from GP2 Team Barwa Addax . Pérez was also sponsored by Ferrari from 2011 . Jérôme D'Ambrosio , who started twelfth in the GP2 series for DAMS in 2010 , received a regular cockpit at Virgin in 2011 . D'Ambrosio had already participated in several Friday training sessions in Formula 1 for Virgin in 2010. In addition, with Paul di Resta at Force India, another driver, who had already participated in Friday training sessions, received a cockpit in Formula 1. Di Resta was the reigning champion of the DTM , in which he had been a works driver for Mercedes . For the ninth race, Daniel Ricciardo joined HRT as a regular driver in Formula 1 parallel to his involvement in the World Series by Renault .
With Narain Karthikeyan a racing driver returned to Formula 1. Karthikeyan was most recently a regular driver in Formula 1 in 2005. In 2010 the racing driver competed in the Superleague Formula .
After Nico Hülkenberg lost his Williams cockpit, he took over the test driver position at Force India in 2011. Bruno Senna , who went from being an HRT pilot to a Renault test driver, made a similar change . During the season at the Belgian Grand Prix he switched to the Renault cockpit. Pedro de la Rosa , who had already left Sauber during the 2010 season and was initially a test driver at the tire manufacturer Pirelli, returned to McLaren and took over the position of test driver again. De la Rosa held this position from 2003 to 2009. After Sauber needed a substitute for the injured Pérez for the Canadian Grand Prix at short notice, de la Rosa stepped in and took over the Sauber cockpit for this Grand Prix weekend. Karun Chandhok , who had to give up his regular HRT cockpit during the 2010 season, was active as a test driver for Lotus in 2011 . He also took part in the German Grand Prix as a driver. Sakon Yamamoto , who replaced Chandhok at HRT in 2010, joined Virgin as a test driver. Lucas di Grassi moved from Virgin as a development driver to the tire manufacturer Pirelli.
Christian Klien , who took part in three Formula 1 races for HRT in 2010, switched to endurance racing and started as an Aston Martin works driver in the Le Mans 24-hour race .
tires
Pirelli has been supplying tires exclusively to the Formula 1 teams since the 2011 season after the previous exclusive supplier Bridgestone announced that it would be withdrawing. The color of the tire lettering indicates the type of tire: rain tires (orange), intermediate (light blue), slicks : supersoft (red), soft (yellow), medium (white), hard (silver). In terms of driving and long-term behavior, the tires differ from their predecessors (degrade more clearly); In addition, as a sign of heavy wear, more rubber can be seen next to the racing line in many places on the track than in 2010.
