The 1960 Automobile World Championship was the 11th season of the Automobile World Championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over ten races between February 7, 1960 and November 20, 1960, the Drivers' World Championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held in this context .

The FIA -Ehrentitel Grand Prix of Europe was at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix award.

Jack Brabham won the Drivers' World Championship for the second time. Cooper became world constructors champion for the second time.

The season was all about defending champion Brabham. While his title last year was seen as a coincidence, the Australian on Cooper impressively demonstrated his strength with five wins in a row. One of his challengers was Lotus , who in its third Formula 1 year designed the Type 18, an absolutely competitive car with a lightweight design and a new wheel suspension. Ferrari was still attached to the concept of the front-engined car and failed, except for a controversial win in Italy, Ferrari could not win any race.

Changes in 1960

There was no longer a World Championship point for the fastest lap, but for sixth place.

The GP of Germany was missing this year, only one Formula 2 race was held on August 1st on the Nürburgring - Südschleife .

The world championship runs

4th Carlos Menditéguy Cooper Maserati + 53.3
5 Wolfgang von Trips Ferrari + 1 lap
6th Innes Ireland lotus + 1 lap

As in the last race of the previous year, the season opener in Argentina was won by Bruce McLaren from New Zealand , who thus became the young star of Formula 1. Stirling Moss ( Cooper ) and Joakim Bonnier ( BRM ), who were in the lead but fell behind with problems , had bad luck . Moss reached third place with his teammate Maurice Trintignant's car , but there were no more World Championship points for it. Defending champion Jack Brabham was also eliminated.

The Lotus brand celebrated its first Grand Prix victory in Monaco, even though Stirling Moss drove a private car for the Rob Walkers team . Graham Hill ( BRM ) raced into the stands, luckily the accident ended lightly. In addition, John Surtees and Richie Ginther celebrated their Formula 1 debut.

500 Miles from Indianapolis (May 30, 1960)

5 Johnny Thomson Lesovsky + 3: 11.35
6th Eddie Johnson Trevis + 4: 10.61

For the last time the 500 miles from Indianapolis were part of the Formula 1 World Championship. With the establishment of the US GP, it was no longer necessary to leave the race on the world championship calendar, which in any case all drivers regarded only as a deletion. About the course of the race: After a tough fight with last year's winner Rodger Ward , Jim Rathmann got the upper hand this time .

The race was overshadowed by a collapse of the grandstand, in which two spectators were killed and 40 injured.

GP Netherlands - Zandvoort (June 6th 1960)

1 Jack Brabham Cooper-Climax 2: 01: 47.2

3 Graham Hill BRM + 56.6
4th Stirling Moss lotus + 57.7
5 Wolfgang von Trips Ferrari + 1 lap
6th Richie Ginther Ferrari + 1 lap

If Jack Brabham had not scored any points in previous races, he was able to celebrate his first win of the season at Zandvoort, while Stirling Moss was only fourth after a flat tire. Jim Clark made his Formula 1 debut on Lotus, but dropped out on lap 43. The failure of Dan Gurney was tragic : In the 12th lap, his BRM raced over a curve and killed a spectator who was there in the restricted zone.

Belgian GP - Spa (June 19, 1960)

5 Jim Clark lotus + 2 rounds
6th Lucien Bianchi Cooper-Climax + 8 rounds

At the Belgian GP, Formula 1 probably experienced its blackest weekend ever. Stirling Moss suffered serious injuries in a training accident, and another training accident ended Michael Taylor's career . In the race it got even worse: On the 20th lap, Chris Bristow on Cooper had a fatal accident after a collision with Willy Mairesse . Just 5 laps later, Alan Stacey was killed when a bird smashed through his helmet, strayed off the track and his car caught fire. The race continued, however, and ended with a triple Cooper triumph. World Cup stand: McLaren 20 points, Brabham 16 points, Moss 11 points.

French GP - Reims (3rd July 1960)

3 Bruce McLaren Cooper-Climax + 51.9
4th Henry Taylor Cooper-Climax + 1 lap
5 Jim Clark lotus + 1 lap
6th Ron Flockhart lotus + 1 lap

Stirling Moss was absent from Belgium after his training accident, so the race at Reims was a clear affair for Cooper . Jack Brabham led a quadruple victory for his team and celebrated his third win in a row. World Cup stand: Brabham 24 points, McLaren 24 points, Moss 11 points

British GP - Silverstone (July 16, 1960)

space driver team time

3 Innes Ireland lotus +1: 29.6
4th Bruce McLaren Cooper-Climax + 1 lap
5 Tony Brooks Cooper-Climax + 1 rounds
6th Wolfgang von Trips Ferrari + 2 rounds

The race at Silverstone brought a brilliant act from Graham Hill to BRM. He stopped at the start, but then fought his way through the whole field and even took the lead. Unfortunately, he retired shortly afterwards with a brake defect, so that Jack Brabham could celebrate his fourth win in a row. The lotuses of John Surtees and Innes Ireland performed well , finishing second and third respectively. World Cup stand: Brabham 32 points, McLaren 27 points, Moss 11 points, Ireland 11 points

GP Portugal - Porto (14 August 1960)

space driver team time
1 Jack Brabham Cooper-Climax 2: 19: 00.03

4th Wolfgang von Trips Ferrari +1: 58.81
5 Tony Brooks Cooper-Climax + 6 rounds
6th Innes Ireland lotus + 7 rounds

Stirling Moss was there for the first time after his accident in Spa , but was disqualified after a driving error. His brand colleague John Surtees led the race until he crashed into the straw bales. So nothing stood in the way of Jack Brabham's fifth win in a row . World Cup stand: Brabham 40 points, McLaren 33 points, Ireland 12 points.

Italian GP / European GP - Monza (September 4th 1960)

3 Willy Mairesse Ferrari + 1 lap
4th Giulio Cabianca cooper + 2 rounds
5 Wolfgang von Trips Ferrari + 2 rounds
6th Hans Herrmann Porsche + 3 rounds

To help Ferrari , which had only achieved two podium places this season, the organizers decided to hold the race on the long track with a high-speed oval. The British teams ( BRM , Cooper and Lotus ) protested and eventually boycotted the Grand Prix. So only Ferrari and some Formula 2 cars and private drivers were at the start. The race turned into a farce as Ferrari dominated at will, Phil Hill claiming his first F1 victory. The beneficiary of the boycott was Jack Brabham, who, despite not participating, was able to secure his second world title, as his fiercest competitor Bruce McLaren did not compete either. World Cup stand: Brabham 40 points, McLaren 33 points, P. Hill 15 points.

US GP - Riverside (November 20, 1960)

space driver team time
1 Stirling Moss lotus 2: 28: 52.2
2 Innes Ireland lotus + 38.0
3 Bruce McLaren Cooper-Climax +1: 22.0
4th Jack Brabham Cooper-Climax + 1 lap
5 Joakim Bonnier BRM + 1 lap
6th Phil Hill Cooper-Climax + 1 lap

The US GP was held this year in Riverside , California . Ferrari did not compete in the last round of the World Championship due to a lack of a competitive car, possibly also out of counter-protest. The resurgent Stirling Moss celebrated a clear victory in the last race with 2.5 l displacement. From next year, 1.5 liter vehicles will be used.
