The 1967 automobile world championship was the 18th season of the automobile world championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 world championship . The drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held in the context of eleven races between January 2, 1967 and October 22, 1967 .
The FIA honorary title Grand Prix of Europe was awarded to the Grand Prix of Italy in 1967 .
Denis Hulme won the drivers' world championship for the first and only time. Brabham became world constructors champion for the second time.

Denis Hulme won the start from second position and led the field until lap 59 when he had to have his brakes repaired. As a result, John Love initially took the lead in a private Cooper , but lost it to Pedro Rodríguez seven laps before the end because he had to refuel. Rodriguez won his first of two grand prix.

The first laps were determined by Jackie Stewart until his differential was defective. Hulme took the lead. On the 82nd lap, Lorenzo Bandini rammed the barriers made of straw bales in second place. On impact, the Ferrari's leaking gasoline ignited and quickly seized the bales of straw. Bandini was rescued from the car after three minutes, but died on May 10th from his severe burns. Hulme won his first Grand Prix. The distance at the Monaco GP was shortened from 100 to 80 laps from 1968 onwards due to this accident.

The Cosworth DFV engine was used for the first time in this race , initially exclusively in the Lotus 49 . Jim Clark won the race with this car after his team-mate Hill retired while in the lead.

The race was initially led by Jim Clark . When he had to make a pit stop, Stewart took the lead, which he had to give up to Dan Gurney on lap 20 due to transmission problems . Gurney won his only Grand Prix in the Eagle he designed .
Mike Parkes had a serious accident on the first lap of the race and had to end his Formula 1 career due to leg injuries.

As in 1966, Formula 1 and Formula 2 cars drove together on the track at the German Grand Prix , but in separate ratings. The aim was to be able to present more vehicles to the spectators on the long route and to compensate for the expected high failure rate. In Formula 1, Clark led the first three laps until he retired. Then Gurney took the lead, which he lost on the 13th lap to the winner Hulme due to a broken drive shaft. Jackie Oliver won the Formula 2 race .

All drivers started on rain tires. Initially, Hulme was in the lead until Clark caught up with him and took the lead. In the 67th lap, however, Clark spun and fell back, Hulme got a new visor on the boxes. This gave Brabham the lead, which he held to the finish. Brabham was early winner of the constructors' championship after this race. It was the second (after 1966 ) and last for the team. The Canadian Al Pease also drove in an Eagle - Climax in this GP . He crossed the finish line 43 laps behind, but was not classified because he had spent most of the time in the pits.

As is often the case in Monza , there were numerous slipstream duels for positions in 1967 . Gurney , Clark , Brabham , Hulme and Hill initially took turns in the lead until Hill seemed to gain the upper hand. On the 57th lap, however, he had engine failure. This took first Brabham and then Clark in the lead. When Clark ran out of fuel on the final lap, Surtees in the Honda crossed the finish line 0.2 seconds ahead of Brabham.

Before the race, Hulme (47 points) and Brabham (42 points) had the opportunity to win the drivers' world championship. Jim Clark won the race with a start-to-finish victory over Jack Brabham, who was unable to oust his team-mate Hulme, who was third, from first place in the drivers' standings. Denis Hulme won his only world championship title.

South African Formula 1 Championship
In 1967 the eighth South African Formula 1 Championship was held. It consisted of twelve races that were held from January 7, 1967 to December 3, 1967 on racetracks in South Africa , Rhodesia and Mozambique . Drivers who competed in the Formula 1 World Championship did not usually take part in these races. An exception was Bob Anderson . Champion was the Rhodesian racing driver John Love , who won nine races.

The II. Race of Champions took place on March 12, 1967 at the Brands Hatch Circuit . It was the first European Formula 1 race of the year. The route length was 4265 meters. There were two runs of ten laps each, followed by a final run of 40 laps. The total distance was 170.6 km. The starting line-up for the first run was determined in a qualifying session, that for the second run corresponded to the order of arrival at the finish in the first run. The results of the second run were used as the basis for the starting grid for the final. Dan Gurney won all three races, Lorenzo Bandini came second. The Race of Champions was the last Formula 1 race that the Italian, who had a fatal accident two months later at the Monaco Grand Prix, ended.

The I. Daily Express Spring Cup was held on April 15, 1967 in Oulton Park . The length of the course was 4,442 km. There were two runs of ten laps each, followed by the final, which lasted over 30 laps. The total distance of the race was 220 km. The British Formula 1 works teams competed in this race with at least one driver, while Scuderia Ferrari did not take part in the event. Denny Hulme won the first and second round of the race at the Brabham factory, while Hulmes team boss Jack Brabham won the final.

The XIX. BRDC International Trophy took place on April 29, 1967 at the British Silverstone Circuit . The race went over 52 laps of 4.711 km each. The total length of the race was 244.9 km. The British Mike Parkes won the race for Ferrari. His lead over second-placed Brabham was more than a third of a round. It was Parkes' only Formula 1 race that he contested in his home country.

The XVI. Gran Premio di Siracusa was held on May 21, 1967 in the Sicilian city of Syracuse on the Circuito di Siracusa . It went over 56 laps of 5.612 km each (total distance: 314.379 km). Only eight drivers took part in the race, the British Formula 1 teams were not represented at the factory with the exception of Cooper. Bob Anderson , David Hobbs , Guy Ligier and André Wicky were registered but did not take part in the race. Jo Schlesser showed up for practice, but damaged his car so badly in qualifying that he could not take part in the race. The Ferrari drivers Parkes and Scarfiotti each reached the goal after 1: 40.58.4. Both were counted as winners; second place was not awarded. Chris Irwin finished fourth in Reg Parnell's private Lotus BRM.

The XIV International Gold Cup was held on September 16, 1967 in Oulton Park . It went over 45 laps of 4.444 km each (total distance: 199,975 km). All British works teams were registered, but Scuderia Ferrari was missing. The Gold Cup was the first Formula 1 race to be launched by the Tyrrell Racing Organization , which had previously managed BRM's Formula 2 outings. She used four Matra chassis with Ford Cosworth engines in Oulton Park. Tyrrell used the race as preparation for the engagement in the world championship races of the coming season. The team's top driver was Jackie Stewart, who finished second in the race dominated by Jack Brabham, four seconds behind the winner.

The XIII. The Spanish Grand Prix was the last Formula 1 race in 1967. It was held on November 12, 1967 at the Circuito del Jarama . The race went over 90 laps of 3.404 km each (total length: 306.36 km). It was the first Formula 1 race in Spain since 1954. The race served to prepare for the Spanish Grand Prix of the following year , which after the successful restart in 1967 was again a world championship run. The 1967 race was dominated by the drivers of the Lotus team.
