Race of Champions (Formula 1)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the name Race of Champions , automobile races were held from 1965 to 1979 and again in 1983 , which were advertised according to the Formula 1 regulations. They did not count as runs of the Formula 1 World Championship (in English usage: Non-Championship Races ). The venue was the Brands Hatch Circuit in the English county of Kent . The first winner was Mike Spence , the last Keke Rosberg . Jackie Stewart and James Hunt each won two races.

History of origin

As early as the 1950s, in addition to the races for the Formula 1 World Championship, the Grand Prix of Great Britain , several other races were held annually in Great Britain , which were held according to Formula 1 regulations, but were not part of the World Championship. This included races such as the Gold Cup (Formula 1) at Oulton Park and the BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone. In 1965 another championship-free race was added with the Race of Champions. It was the first Formula 1 race of the year on a European racetrack. For the teams, but especially for the designers, it was a welcome opportunity to put their racing cars to a practical test six weeks before the first European World Championship round.

For most of the years, the race was for Formula 1 cars. In 1973 and 1974, the organizers expanded the starting field to include vehicles that were designed according to the Formula 5000 regulations . Peter Gethin won the 1973 race in such a vehicle. After disagreements with the Formula 1 designers, the later events were again limited to Formula 1 cars.
