Thomas Maldwyn "Tom" Pryce (born June 11, 1949 in Ruthin , Denbighshire , Wales , † March 5, 1977 in Kyalami , Transvaal , South Africa ) was a British racing driver . He started in Formula 1 from 1974 until his death and is still considered the best and most successful Welsh driver in this motorsport class.

Career

Pryce began his career in 1970 in Formula Ford , shortly afterwards he switched to Formula Super Vee and finally in 1972 to the Formula 3 series in Great Britain . Due to his good performance and his great talent, he got the chance to drive for Ron Dennis in Formula 2 , which became a stepping stone for him into Formula 1.

Accident sites in Kyalami

Pryce made his debut in the “premier class” for the token team at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1974 , which took place on the Circuit Nivelles-Baulers . In 1975 he won the legendary Race of Champions at Brands Hatch . After this victory at the latest, he was considered the greatest British racing talent since Roger Williamson and Tony Brise . With the pole position at the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1975 and two third places at the Grand Prix of Austria in 1975 and the Grand Prix of Brazil in 1976 in his new Shadow team , he was finally able to establish himself in Formula 1.

Death in Kyalami 1977

Tom Pryce Memorial in his native Ruthin

Pryce died during the 1977 South African Grand Prix . Two young marshals crossed the runway to extinguish the shadow of Pryce's team-mate Renzo Zorzi , which had stopped and was briefly on fire. Since the scene of the accident was directly behind a hilltop with a slight bend to the right (“The Kink”) on the start-finish straight, the two marshals were not visible to the pilots of an approaching group of wagons.

The German Hans-Joachim Stuck was just able to evade. Tom Pryce in the Shadow Ford DN8 had no way of reacting and caught one of the marshals, 18-year-old Frederik Janse Van Vuuren, at 250 km / h. The marshal's fire extinguisher hit Pryce in the head and broke his neck. Both were instantly dead. Pryce's racing car continued to race uncontrolled down the start-finish straight until it collided with the Frenchman Jacques Laffite's Ligier in the Crowthorne curve . Laffite was uninjured due to the acute angle of impact. The race continued despite the accident, Niki Lauda won in the Ferrari .
