Reports
background
After a relatively short winter break, in the shadow of the oil crisis, Formula 1 started the first round of the new season in Buenos Aires , where the long version of the local racetrack was driven for the first time, which included a wide loop around a lake.
For the first time in the history of Formula 1, the vehicles were given fixed start numbers before the first round of the World Championship, which were valid for the entire season. In previous years, the numbers had been assigned individually before almost every Grand Prix.
Compared to the 1973 season, there was a sharp change in the driver line-up for most teams.
After the death of François Cevert and the end of Jackie Stewart's career, Ken Tyrrell had to completely reorganize his team and signed Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler as regular drivers.
Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni remained teammates, but from this season as regular drivers at Ferrari . The gap that the two left at BRM was closed with the two Frenchmen Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo . In addition, a third works car was reported, driven by another French driver, François Migault .
Peter Revson had left McLaren and became a teammate of Jean-Pierre Jarier at Shadow . Revson's place at McLaren was taken by Emerson Fittipaldi . His cockpit at Lotus was manned by Jacky Ickx . The two teammates, Denis Hulme and Ronnie Peterson , were among the few pilots who remained loyal to their respective team from the previous year. In addition to the two Fittipaldi and Hulme cars sponsored by Texaco and Marlboro , McLaren planned the year-round use of a third factory car in the colors of the sponsor Yardley. This was initially piloted by Mike Hailwood . Jochen Mass took his place in the Surtees team at the side of Carlos Pace .
Brabham started the season with Formula 1 newcomer Richard Robarts in the second car alongside regular driver Carlos Reutemann . The second regular driver of the previous year, Wilson Fittipaldi , had decided to take a break from his racing career to devote himself to building his own team. A third Brabham was used by the private racing team John Goldie Racing as a customer vehicle and was driven by John Watson .
The March factory team signed the German debutant Hans-Joachim Stuck and Howden Ganley , who had left the Frank Williams Racing Cars team. Arturo Merzario took his previous place as the only regular driver of this team . Frank Williams continued his strategy from the previous year of having the second car driven by paying guest starters in the new season.
The Hesketh Racing team planned to use an in-house design, but began the season as last year as a March customer team with James Hunt as the driver. The now almost 45-year-old Graham Hill had signed a contract with Lola Cars and used their cars on his own. He occupied the second cockpit next to him with Guy Edwards , the third Formula 1 debutant this weekend.
training
Ronnie Peterson, who started from pole position nine times last year, continued this success story with his fourth training fastest time in a row. Regazzoni's second starting position in the revised Ferrari 312B3, on the other hand, was a surprise for the traditional Italian racing team as well as for the professional world after the crisis year of 1973. Fittipaldi and Revson shared the second row. James Hunt qualified for an impressive fifth place in his March 731 of the Hesketh team, modified by Harvey Postlethwaite .
run
Behind Peterson, who converted his pole position into a lead, James Hunt made a good start. Behind them Regazzoni, Revson and Hailwood reached one of the first corners at the same time and collided. While Hailwood was able to continue the race almost unaffected, Regazzoni and Revson turned. Jarier could no longer evade and crashed into his teammate Revson's car, causing both Shadows to be eliminated. Merzario and Watson were also easily involved in the accident, Jody Scheckter was able to avoid the grass next to the runway.
In the course of the first round, Hunt lost his chances of a good placement by spinning. Reutemann came in second position ahead of Fittipaldi, Hailwood, Ickx and Hulme.
Local hero Reutemann took the lead in the third lap, while Fittipaldi had to make a technically-related pit stop. When Peterson, now in second place, had braking problems a little later, he was overtaken by Ickx and Hulme. Meanwhile, Lauda overtook Hailwood and passed Peterson a little later.
Because Ickx had to go to the pits on the 27th lap due to a puncture, Lauda came third. At the front, Reutemann seemed to control the race. However, during the final laps he gradually ran out of fuel, which resulted in misfiring. On the last lap he was overtaken by six opponents to the chagrin of the Argentine spectators. Hulme won ahead of Lauda and Regazzoni, who had gradually worked his way up again after the collision on the starting lap.
