location

The Eilenburger Tierpark is located in the south of the Mitte district on the edge of the city park. From the train station Eilenburg he can be reached on foot in about five minutes and the Market Square in about ten minutes. The Mühlgraben flows past the park .

history

The first enclosures for red deer and wild boar, beavers and goats were built in 1959. Three years later, the city also built a stable and a small farmyard. In 1975 this stable building was extended and rooms were set up for the employees of the zoo. At this time, the first aquariums and terrariums were purchased. In the same year the sponsor ship of the city that gave MS Eilenburg the DSR , the zoo three Indian Hutaffen ; they moved into a specially built, heated new building. At the beginning of the 1980s, the wooden enclosures were falling into disrepair. New enclosures, farm buildings, a sewage treatment plant, water pipes and lighting were created in voluntary work.

After the fall of the Wall in 1990, the zoo became the responsibility of the city. The staff was thus taken over into the public service, the zoo as a municipal facility was financed directly from the city budget. The maintenance of the facility was ensured with job creation measures.

In 1992 the Tierparkverein Eilenburg e. V. as a development association . Due to the decay of the main building and a lack of funds from the city, the continued existence of the zoo was no longer guaranteed. The association offered to carry out the renovation at its own expense, and a corresponding contract with the city was drawn up. In 1998 the zoo became the sponsorship of the zoo association, until 2001 the association carried out the renovation of the main building as well as the construction of visitor toilets, the Tropicana warm house and a snack bar.

On August 13, 2002, the zoo was badly affected by the flood of the Mulde . If the animals in the game enclosure could still be released, many animals were defenseless, around a third of the animal population perished. The damage in the entire park was then put at 320,000 euros; as a result, donations were received from all over Germany. The following projects were implemented with the flood funds:

  • November 2002: Reopening of the Tropicana warm house
  • June 2003: Opening of the new lynx enclosure
  • 2004: Reconstruction of the goat enclosure to become a petting enclosure
  • November 2004: Opening of the pet house
  • 2005: Completion of the crane system; Run-out area for ponies and donkeys
  • 2007: Completion of the eagle owl aviary.

In September 2007 the annual meeting of the German Animal Park Society took place in the Eilenburger Tierpark. In 2008, the facility was voted one of the top 10 Central German zoos by viewers on MDR television . In 2007 a restaurant was also built, and in 2009 a new ferret enclosure. In 2011 a new outdoor enclosure for the hat monkeys was opened. In 2019 a new warm house (“Tropicana”) was opened as part of the exotic world.
