The Dübener Heide Nature Park , which includes large parts of the Dübener Heide of the same name , is the first nature park in Germany that was not created by the government due to citizens' initiatives . In order to prevent the lignite mining from advancing further and spreading in its vicinity, the first citizens' initiatives for the protection and preservation of nature emerged around 1990.

The nature park represents one of the Saale Ice Age embossed, varied, hilly moorland while traditional excursion and recreation area in the relatively sparsely wooded core central Germany . It is roughly equal parts in the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt about halfway between Wittenberg in the Northeast and Leipzig in the southwest. Other larger cities in the immediate vicinity are Dessau , Bitterfeld and Torgau . In the north and northeast, the nature park is bounded by the floodplains of the middle Elbe . It is bordered to the west by the cities of Bitterfeld, Graefenhainichen and the Mulde . The interior of the park is accessed through Bundesstraße 2 . To the south it reaches up to the federal highway 87 with Eilenburg and Bad Düben . Geographically, it represents a landscape of terminal moraines and sand , which consists mainly of coniferous forest, mixed forest, lakes, bog and grassland. The predominant tree species is the pine.

The nature park covers a total area of approx. 770 km² and with a population of 68,400 (as of December 31, 2000) has a population density of 89 inhabitants per km². 66% of the area is forest, 29% is used for agriculture, 2% is settlement area, 2% is water and 1% is areas for trade and infrastructure . Hikes can be undertaken on around 1000 km of marked cycling and hiking trails.

The organization responsible for the nature park is the Dübener Heide eV association. The association, which was founded on September 28, 1930, was re-established on March 31, 1990. He is a member of the Association of German Nature Parks and the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations .
