The 1974 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in São Paulo on January 27 and was the second race of the 1974 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

In 1974 the Brazilian Grand Prix saw its third edition. It was the second time since 1973 that the race had world championship status.

With the exception of the Ensign team and its driver Rikky from Opel , the same field of participants entered the second World Championship round of the season in São Paulo, which had already contested the opening race in Argentina two weeks earlier. As a result of the accident that happened there shortly after take-off, in which both drivers of the Shadow team were involved, the team had to have a new chassis flown in from the factory in Great Britain. This arrived just in time for the start of the first timed practice.

One week after the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Grande Prêmio Presidente Medici took place in the capital, Brasília , a Formula 1 race without world championship status , in which eight teams and twelve drivers took part and which Emerson Fittipaldi won.

training

Local hero Emerson Fittipaldi qualified for pole position in the McLaren M23 from Brabham driver Carlos Reutemann . With third place on the grid, Niki Lauda confirmed the upward trend of Scuderia Ferrari after the previous year of crisis. This was followed by the two works Lotus from Ronnie Peterson and Jacky Ickx as well as the Shadow from Peter Revson .

run

The start of the race was postponed slightly because the track had to be cleaned of broken pieces that the celebrating spectators had left.

Reutemann, who started from the front row, initially took the lead in front of Peterson. Pole-setter Fittipaldi found himself in third place ahead of Clay Regazzoni , while Lauda struggled with engine misfiring.

Reutemann was able to defend the lead up to the fourth lap before he was overtaken by both Peterson and Fittipaldi. Due to its softer tires compared to most of its competitors, Reutemann also fell behind Regazzoni and Ickx in the course of the following laps.

In the 16th lap, Fittipaldi tricked the leading Peterson while lapping Arturo Merzario and took over the lead, which he defended from then on. Peterson had to pull into the pits three laps later because of a puncture, possibly caused by broken fragments still lying around in some places, and fell back. This put Regazzoni and Ickx in second and third place respectively.

When it began to rain heavily on lap 31 after a dry race to date, the race management decided to stop the race for safety reasons. Brief confusion arose from the fact that third-placed Ickx was the first to be flagged.
