Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the season opener in South Africa two weeks earlier also took part in the second World Cup round of the year in Brazil.
training
The Williams pilots Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified for the front row in front of Ayrton Senna , Michael Schumacher , Michael Andretti and Riccardo Patrese .
run
While Prost took the lead in front of Senna and Hill, Michael Andretti collided with Gerhard Berger . The McLaren MP4 / 8 flew over the Ferrari F93A and narrowly missed Berger's helmet. Then both cars hit the track barrier.
Prost quickly gained a head start. His teammate, who was equipped with identical material, was noticeably stopped by Senna. It wasn't until the eleventh lap that Hill managed to overtake the Brazilian. Because of an unauthorized maneuver under yellow flags, he had to serve a 10-second penalty in the pit lane on lap 23 and thereby lost third place to Schumacher.
When a heavy thunderstorm fell over the track, Aguri Suzuki lost control of his car on the start-finish straight and had an accident. His compatriot Ukyō Katayama fared similarly. Most of the pilots headed for the pit lane as quickly as possible to have rain tires fitted. Prost overheard a radio message in which he was also called for a pit stop and thereby lost part of his lead as he had to complete another lap on slicks on a wet track . A little later he collided with Christian Fittipaldi's car, which had just had an accident . The safety car was sent out on the track to control the remaining vehicles during the rescue work around the track. Hill was in the lead at the time, ahead of Senna and Schumacher. Jean Alesi illegally overtook several competitors during the safety car phase.
When the track dried up, Johnny Herbert was the first to go to the pit to put on slicks again. This decision turned out to be the right one, as it won him several positions. After all the drivers had changed their tires, Herbert was in third place behind Senna and Hill. In the third from last lap, however, he was relegated to fourth place by Schumacher. Mark Blundell was fifth ahead of Alessandro Zanardi .
McLaren celebrated his 100th Grand Prix win and Ayrton Senna his second home win.
After Senna drove over the finish line, fans stormed the route around Senna. Senna finally stopped his car on the Reta Oposta straight so as not to hurt the fans with his McLaren. He was then driven back to the pits with the safety car along with other drivers.
