Daniel R. Grischkowsky

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Richard Grischkowsky (born April 17, 1940 in St. Helens , Oregon ) is an American physicist.

life and work

Grischkowsky studied at Oregon State University with a bachelor's degree in 1962 and Columbia University with a master's degree in 1965 and a doctorate in physics in 1968. He was at the Radiation Laboratory of Columbia University and from 1969 in the laser physics department of IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center where he became the manager of various research departments (first atomic physics with lasers, then ultrafast processes with lasers). From 1993 he was Bellmomt Professor of Optoelectronics at Oklahoma State University . Since 2001 he has been Regents Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering there.

He is considered to be one of the pioneers of terahertz radiation physics and terahertz spectroscopy (Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy). He also developed pulse compression with fiber optics (for which he received an award from IBM in 1984).

In 1989 he received the RW Wood Prize (for pioneering work in the use of fiber optics for the generation of ultra-short pulses), in 2003 the William F. Meggers Award from the Optical Society of America (OSA), in 2011 the Kenneth J. Button Prize and in 1985 the Boris Pregel Award of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the OSA (1988), the IEEE (1992) and the American Physical Society (1982). In 2008 he became an honorary professor at Tianjin University in China.
