The 1990 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in São Paulo on March 24th and was the second race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

For the first time since 1980 the Brazilian Grand Prix took place again at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo. In the meantime, however, the course had been shortened by almost half.

The only change in the field of drivers compared to the season opener in Phoenix was the first appearance of Alex Caffi at Arrows instead of Bernd Schneider .

training

The two McLaren teammates Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger qualified for the front row ahead of the two Williams by Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese and the two Ferraris by Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost .

Senna was the only one who reached average speeds over 200 km / h on his fastest laps. He managed to do this on both training days.

run

Senna initially took the lead ahead of Berger, Boutsen and Prost. On the eighth lap, Berger was overtaken by Boutsen.

When approaching a pit stop, Boutsen rammed one of the tires that had been designed for him and damaged his front wing. After a collision with the Satoru Nakajima to be lapped, Ayrton Senna also had to go to the pits. As a result, Prost took the lead and won ahead of Berger, Senna, Mansell and Boutsen. Nelson Piquet received the last World Championship point of the day in sixth place.
