Reports

background

There were no changes in the list of participants compared to the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Gerhard Berger qualified for pole position ahead of Riccardo Patrese , Ayrton Senna , Nigel Mansell , Thierry Boutsen and Jean Alesi . Alain Prost only reached 13th place on the grid.

run

After Patrese had taken the lead before the first corner, Senna finished the first lap in the lead. His team-mate Berger established a McLaren double lead from the second lap. However, after he had to make a pit stop on lap 13 due to a tire problem, he came back on track in twelfth place. Nelson Piquet was in second place ahead of the two Williams and the two Ferraris .

By the 42nd lap, the two Ferrari drivers finished second and third past both Williams drivers and Piquet. Aided by a creeping puncture on Senna's car, the two caught up with the leader. On lap 55 there was an exchange of places between the two, so that Prost took the lead when Senna fell back due to the bursting of the damaged tire and finally had to give up the race at the pits.

During the final laps Mansell and Berger dueled for third place, with Mansell ultimately leading. Alessandro Nannini took fourth place ahead of Thierry Boutsen and Nelson Piquet.
