The 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 12th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the tenth race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .

The same drivers who had contested the German Grand Prix two weeks earlier also competed in the tenth World Championship round of the year in Hungary.

The sponsor Camel announced that from 1991 onwards it would no longer support the Lotus team , but rather Williams and Benetton .

For the only time in the season, no McLaren or Ferrari driver qualified for pole position, but Thierry Boutsen in the Williams FW13B , who was also flanked on the front row by his teammate Riccardo Patrese . Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna , who tried new Goodyear tires, followed ahead of Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi .

After an accident during the second qualifying session on Saturday, Gregor Foitek announced his immediate departure from Team Onyx . He did not return to Formula 1 in the following years either.

Shortly after the start, Patrese was overtaken by Berger, Senna by Mansell and Alesi. This was followed by Andrea de Cesaris , Alessandro Nannini , Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost .

On lap 21, Senna managed to overtake Alesi, who seemed to be holding back the following drivers while the leading quartet pulled away from the rest of the field. Shortly afterwards, however, Senna had to go to the pits due to a puncture. He came back on track in tenth. Meanwhile, Alesi also fell behind Nannini and Piquet and behind Prost on lap 34. However, he retired three laps later due to a gearbox damage. Alesi also had to give up the race after a collision with Pierluigi Martini, who had to be lapped .

By the 56th lap, Senna moved up to third place, which was helped by pit stops by some competitors. Mansell had also dropped to fifth as a result of a failed attempt to overtake Patrese.

When Senna tried to overtake Nannini on lap 64, he collided with him. The Italian dropped out. Senna continued the race in second place. When Berger tried a similar overtaking maneuver at the same point against Mansell on lap 72, there was another collision. This time both pilots involved dropped out.

Thierry Boutsen won just ahead of Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet. Riccardo Patrese was fourth ahead of Derek Warwick and Éric Bernard . The Larrousse team was again not credited with a point for the constructors' championship, as the vehicle used was not an in-house design.
