The McLaren MP4 / 5 is a Formula 1 racing car from the McLaren team that was used in the 1989 season . Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won ten Grand Prix and 15 pole positions with the car developed by Neil Oatley .
In the 1990 season, Senna and Gerhard Berger achieved six more victories and twelve pole positions with the modified version of the vehicle called the McLaren MP4 / 5B . In both years McLaren won both the drivers 'and the constructors' championships.
technology
The monocoque was a sandwich construction with outer layers made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and a core in a honeycomb structure and was manufactured by Hercules Aerospace in the USA. The front and rear wheel suspensions consisted of double triangular wishbones lying one above the other. The front wishbones were fastened outside the top and inside the monocoque at the bottom; the lower wishbones on the rear axle were attached to the gearbox. The shock absorbers came from the Showa Corporation and the hardness could be adjusted from the cockpit. The carbon-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic brake discs were manufactured by Carbon Industries , while the four-piston calipers came from Brembo .
The MP4 / 5 was powered by a V10 engine from Honda with a 72 ° cylinder bank angle and the type designation RA109E (1989) or RA100E (1990), which weighed 153 kg. The naturally aspirated engine installed lengthways in front of the rear axle had a displacement of 3493 cm³, the bore was 92.0 mm and the stroke 52.5 mm. The RA109E made at 12,800 min -1 660-680 hp, the RA100E turned 13,300 min -1 and provided about 20 hp. A six-speed manual transmission from McLaren took over the power transmission, the dry multi-plate clutch with carbon fiber reinforced discs came from AP Racing . During the 1990 season, McLaren tested a semi-automatic transmission with a hydropneumatic gear change system several times, but it was never used in the race due to stability problems.
The revisions to the MP4 / 5B mainly concerned the aerodynamics: the front section became higher and narrower, and the side pods were also raised to allow better outflow of the cooling air. Because of Gerhard Berger's great body length, the roll bar had to be raised, both on the airbox and in front of the cockpit. From the Spanish Grand Prix , McLaren used an enlarged diffuser with elongated air ducts.
