The McLaren MP4 / 2C is a Formula 1 vehicle produced by the British racing car manufacturer McLaren Racing and used by the team during the 1986 Formula 1 season . The car won four Grand Prix victories with drivers Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg and thus achieved the second driver's title for Prost and second behind Williams-Honda in the constructors' championship.
construction
The MP4 / 2C was a further development of the MP4 / 2 series and successor to the McLaren MP4 / 2B turbo from the previous year, with which Prost had become world champion. The chief designer of the new car was John Barnard . McLaren used a six-cylinder turbo engine (type TTE-PO1) with a displacement of 1499 cubic centimeters, financed by TAG and built by Porsche . The power was around 590 kW (≈800 PS). A five-speed gearbox from McLaren served as power transmission. The most important change compared to the previous model was the tank capacity, which was reduced by 25 liters to 195 liters on the MP4 / 2C. It thus complied with the requirements of the FISA , which pursued the goal of lowering the gasoline consumption of turbo vehicles and thus reducing speeds. The car had four disc brakes ; the wheels were suspended from double wishbones with internal springs.
The tire supplier for the team was Goodyear . The main sponsors were Marlboro , Shell, TAG Heuer and Segafredo Zanetti .
driver
Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg were signed up as drivers . Rosberg was overshadowed by his team-mate throughout the season. There were no test pilots this season.
Season course
In 1986, the MP4 / 2C was clearly inferior to the Williams FW11 with Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet . Alain Prost achieved a pole position with the car and four Grand Prix victories, which he achieved in San Marino, Monaco, Austria and Australia. In total, the McLaren drivers stood on the podium twelve times; eleven of them cheers. Rosberg also only achieved one pole position. His best result was a second place in Monaco.
Like many other Formula 1 cars this season, the MP4 / 2C suffered from a lack of fuel, which led to several breakdowns. At the German Grand Prix he rolled 100 meters from the finish line without fuel. Prost got out of his car and tried to push the car over the finish line. Ultimately, he was classified sixth.
In the end, Prost secured the world championship title two points ahead of Mansell in the last race of the season, benefiting from an accident with the Briton and a pit stop from Piquets, who had previously led the race.
