The McLaren MP4-29 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of McLaren Racing for the Formula 1 2014 season . It was the 42nd McLaren Formula 1 car. The car was presented on January 24, 2014 in Woking . The presentation was broadcast live on the YouTube internet platform .
Technology and development
The MP4-29 is the successor model of the MP4-28 , although the vehicle differed from the predecessor model both externally and technically due to the changed rules for the 2014 Formula 1 season .
The MP4-29 was powered by the newly developed Mercedes-Benz PU106A Hybrid , a 1.6-liter V6 engine with a turbocharger . While the ERS came from the engine manufacturer Mercedes , the eight-speed transmission is an in-house development by McLaren. Due to the regulations, there was only one central exhaust pipe that was above the rear light. In addition, the air inlet of the airbox above the driver's helmet was divided into two by a horizontal strut.
Due to the rule changes for the 2014 season, the nose of the vehicle was lower than that of the vehicle from the previous year. The front wing was suspended from two struts that were quite far apart, while the nose protruding forward was narrower. This earned the vehicle the nickname " Coati " when it was presented .
The upper wishbones and tie rods on the rear suspension of the MP4-29 have been covered. In the area of the rear wing, they had a wing profile and should thus generate additional downforce on the rear axle.
Painting and sponsorship
The MP4-29 is painted silver-gray. The red accents of the previous model disappeared after the main sponsor Vodafone left . Sponsor stickers on the vehicle come from Mobil 1 , Hugo Boss and TAG Heuer .
In the run-up to the Australian Grand Prix , McLaren announced that it would initially be competing without a new main sponsor, but with black sidepods and large Mobil 1 logos. The reason for this was the 20-year partnership between McLaren and the ExxonMobil group . At the next races, Esso , SAP and Gulf Air were advertised in the open spaces.
driver
Jenson Button stayed with McLaren. His new teammate was Formula 1 rookie Kevin Magnussen , who replaced Sergio Pérez . Pérez switched to Force India .
Further development
In autumn 2014 the MP4-29 was converted to a Honda engine. The vehicle, known as MP4-29 H / 1X1, served as an interim vehicle and was used for the first time in the test drives after the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. With him, McLaren tested the new drive unit from Honda, which the team used from the 2015 season . The testing was problematic. Test pilot Stoffel Vandoorne hardly got to drive due to electronic problems; on both days of testing, he only completed five individual installation rounds.
