The McLaren MP4 / 15 was the Formula 1 race car of McLaren Racing for the 2000 season , took part in all 17 races of the season.

Technology and development

The technical director for development was Adrian Newey . He oversaw Neil Oatley for the construction and Henri Durand for the aerodynamic shape of the car.

The car can be seen as an evolution of last year's model MP4 / 14 . Noticeable is the nose, which was shortened and directed downwards, individual openings above the side radiators, so-called chimneys ( German : Luftauslass-Kamine ), and a single exhaust at the rear. The engine was the naturally aspirated FO110J-V10 engine from Mercedes-Benz with a displacement of 2,998 cm³ and a cylinder bank angle of 72 °. It weighed around 92 kg, developed around 600 kW (815 hp) at 17,400 rpm and was the most powerful engine at the beginning of the 2000 season. This enabled the car to reach speeds of 352 km / h. The self-developed semi-automatic transmission had seven gears and was completely redesigned for the 2000 season.

The tires were supplied by Bridgestone , the fuel and engine oil by Mobil 1 and the rims by Enkei .

Racing history

The car was tested for the first time on January 3, 2000 at the Circuito de Jerez and one month later, on February 3, 2000, it was also presented to the world in Jerez. As in the past two years, the car showed great potential, the new test driver Olivier Panis was often able to achieve the fastest race lap in tests.

But despite the competitiveness, it turned out that the car had problems with reliability at the beginning of the season, so Häkkinen was eliminated in the first two races and Coulthard was disqualified in Brazil due to a front wing that was seven millimeters too low. They were eliminated five times, three of them due to a defective engine. At the end of the season, Mika Häkkinen finished second behind Michael Schumacher by 19 points, McLaren also only finished second in the constructors' championship and had to admit defeat Ferrari by 28 points .

Painting and sponsorship

The design was again kept in gray-black with a white nose, interrupted by red elements on the tip of the nose and next to the engine. The logo of the main sponsor West was placed on the side pods and the rear wing . Other sponsors were Computer Associates , Hugo Boss , Mobil 1 , Schweppes , Siemens , TAG Heuer and Warsteiner .

The races in Great Britain , France and the United States had to do without tobacco advertising. Instead, the first names of the respective driver were placed in the places of the logos.

driver

The regular drivers were Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard as the reigning world champion , while Olivier Panis , previous year's Prost driver , and Darren Turner were nominated as test and reserve drivers . The race engineer in charge for Häkkinen was Mark Slade and for Coulthard it was Pat Fry .

Further use of the chassis

A car driven by David Coulthard is on display in the Donington Grand Prix Collection . Another Coulthard car was exhibited at the Rétromobile in Paris in 2014 .
