The Formula 1 World Championship 2000 was the 51st season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 17 races in the period from March 12, 2000 to October 22, 2000. The first time since 1991 the US Grand Prix was a new addition to the calendar .
Michael Schumacher won the drivers' world championship for the third time. It was his first world title for the Ferrari team and the first drivers title that Ferrari has won since 1979. The constructors' championship was won for the second time in a row by Ferrari.
Changes in 2000
Technical regulations
Only V10 engines with a cubic capacity of 3,000 cm³ were allowed. Since no team had used V8 engines since 1998, this change to the regulations was only an adjustment to the current status. It was also decreed that all Formula 1 engines must be run on fuel from this year onwards, normal gasoline, as you know it from gas stations, is largely similar.
Racetracks
For the first time since 1991 there was a US Grand Prix , which increased the number of races this season to 17. With the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the venue, Formula 1 followed the tradition that the Indianapolis 500 race was part of the Formula 1 World Championship until 1960. In contrast to this race, however, the well-known oval track was only used in sections as part of a new Formula 1 circuit.
In addition, the racing calendar was changed in several positions. At the end of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix swapped positions - the season finale should now take place in Sepang . In addition, the European races of the season have been changed: the Great Britain Grand Prix moved from summer to spring, as did the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring from September to May. Because the Monaco Grand Prix again took place on the Ascension weekend, this race also slipped to a date in early June.
Teams
The Stewart team was taken over by this company after three years in which this racing team had been the exclusive engine partner of Ford and henceforth reported under the name Jaguar Racing .
In a similar way, Renault acquired the Benetton team a few days after the start of the season , but decided not to rename it for the time being.
Engines
Honda returned as an engine supplier and initially supplied the BAR team exclusively . Previously, the Honda name had only been represented in Formula 1 since 1993 by its subsidiary Mugen , which last equipped the Jordan team in 2000 .
Even BMW entered the first time since 1987 again as an engine supplier in appearance and has been the exclusive partner of Williams .
After two years in which engines designed by Hart had been reported under the team name, Arrows switched to Supertec engines that had previously been used at BAR and Williams.
The original Ford engine, which Minardi had independently developed, was registered under the name Fondmetal that year .
driver
The main changes were related to the acquisition of Stewart by Ford: Stewart driver Rubens Barrichello and Ferrari -Pilot Eddie Irvine , runner-up last year, exchanged while the courts.
At Jordan, Jarno Trulli took the place of the ex-world champion Damon Hill, who retired after the 1999 season . Trulli's place at Prost was taken by Nick Heidfeld, the 1999 Formula 3000 world champion . The change of the French veteran Jean Alesi , who came from Sauber , completed the repositioning of the French racing team. In return, Olivier Panis no longer received a racing cockpit and spent 2000 as a test driver at McLaren . In turn, Sauber brought Mika Salo into the team for Alesi , who had replaced the injured Michael Schumacher for several races at Ferrari in 1999 .
At Williams, Alessandro Zanardi , who was disappointing last year, left Formula 1 racing and was replaced by debutant Jenson Button . At Arrows, Jos Verstappen returned to Formula 1 after a one-year absence. His predecessor Toranosuke Takagi did not appear again in this racing series. Minardi also re-occupied one of the cockpits and launched the paydriver Gastón Mazzacane for the hapless Luca Badoer .
There were no changes only at Benetton and BAR.
The field of drivers remained largely homogeneous over the season. The only temporary change of line-up concerned Jaguar, where Luciano Burti replaced Eddie Irvine for a race at the Austrian Grand Prix . Irvine had complained of abdominal pain during Friday training and was diagnosed with appendicitis.

News in brief Formula 1
- For the first time since 1979 the driver's title goes to Ferrari. The team can win the constructors' championship repeatedly.
- Nine season victories for Schumacher mean the setting of the previous best performance, which was set by Nigel Mansell (1992) and Schumacher himself (1995). Only one driver had achieved 108 championship points within one season - Nigel Mansell (1992).
- For the only time so far in the history of Formula 1, all races were consistently held every two weeks.
