training

Qualifying
In qualifying, which initially took place on a dry track and then in the rain, Coulthard set the fastest time and took pole position in front of Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen. For Nick Heidfeld , the race weekend was already over after qualifying. Heidfeld's Prost was 2 kg too light, whereupon the racing driver was disqualified and excluded from the rest of the race weekend.
Warm up
In the warm-up, Michael Schumacher drove the fastest lap ahead of Häkkinen and Heinz-Harald Frentzen .
run
Coulthard hesitated too long at the start of the European Grand Prix, while Häkkinen started the race well. Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher touched lightly, but the touch had no consequences for either of them. Häkkinen led the field in front of Michael Schumacher, Coulthard, Barrichello and Villeneuve. Behind it, Jarno Trulli collided with Giancarlo Fisichella , causing Trulli to fail. Two laps later, the race for the Jordan team ended prematurely, as Frentzen also retired with an engine failure.
Coulthard had a problem and kept Barrichello behind him and enabled Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher to pull away in the lead. On lap 10 it started to rain and Michael Schumacher managed to overtake Häkkinen at the chicane one lap later. When the rain got heavier, Barrichello also managed to drive past Coulthard. In the next laps, the Ferraris broke away from the McLaren drivers until Coulthard pitted to change tires on lap 14. Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen follow one lap later, with Schumacher retaining the position in front of the McLaren drivers. Barrichello stayed out for one more lap and led the race on that lap. After his stop, however, he fell behind and had to overtake a few drivers over the next few laps.
After Mika Salo was eliminated after 27 laps with a spin, there was a collision between three drivers: Jos Verstappen tried to drive past Eddie Irvine , but Irvine left him no space and both collided. Irvine met Ralf Schumacher's Williams . At the top, Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen had to lap previous pilots. Schumacher managed to increase his lead. While Coulthard fell back bit by bit with gearbox problems, Barrichello improved to fifth place behind Fisichella with an overtaking maneuver against Pedro de la Rosa . After 35 laps, Schumacher came into the pits with a lead of 20 seconds over Häkkinen and made his second stop. When he returned to the track, he was 7 seconds behind the now leading Häkkinen.
While Häkkinen extended his lead at the front with a lightweight car, Barrichello overtook Fisichella and took fourth position. However, he was no longer in the same lap as the leading drivers. After 45 laps, Häkkinen also pitted for his final stop. Schumacher took the lead and was 11 seconds ahead of his opponent. While Villeneuve and Marc Gené were out with technical problems and Ricardo Zonta after a spin, Barrichello shortened his deficit to third-placed Coulthard. Six laps before the end of the race there was a collision between Herbert and Wurz in the position battle for seventh place, in which both drivers were eliminated. A lap later, Button also retired with electrical damage.
Although Häkkinen managed to reduce his gap to Schumacher to five seconds in the meantime, Schumacher finally won with a lead of 13 seconds over Häkkinen. One lap behind, Coulthard, Barrichello, Fisichella and de la Rosa followed in third to sixth.
In the world championship, Michael Schumacher succeeded in increasing the lead over Häkkinen a little, and Ferrari also set itself a little more apart from McLaren-Mercedes. Behind the first two designers and the third-placed Williams-BMW, a larger gap had already formed.
