The Jaguar R1 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Jaguar Racing for the 2000 season , took part in all 17 races of the season. It was the first car to be called Jaguar after Team Stewart was completely taken over by Ford last year .

Technology and development

The technical director for development was Gary Anderson . He oversaw John Russell for the construction and Darren Davies for the aerodynamic shape of the car.

The engine was the naturally aspirated CR2-V10 engine from Ford - Cosworth with a displacement of 2,998 cm³ and a cylinder bank angle of 72 °. It weighed around 105 kg and developed around 600 kW (805 hp) at 17,500 rpm. This enabled the car to reach speeds of up to 350 km / h. The self-developed sequential hydraulic semi-automatic transmission had six gears with a magnesium cover. A double wishbone axle with stabilizer , internal springs and integrated shock absorbers , actuated by push rods , was used for the front and rear suspension . The nose of the car, as McLaren also built, was kept relatively low, while the two exhausts were similar to those of Ferrari .

The fuel was purchased from Texaco , the tires from Bridgestone , the suspension from Penske and the electronics from Visteon .

Racing history

On September 14, 1999 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt / Main, Jaguar's managing director, Wolfgang Reitzle , announced that the Stewart Grand Prix team had been bought by Ford in June 1999 and that they would start as Jaguar Racing from the 2000 season would.

On January 5, 2000, the Jaguar R1 was tested for the first time in camera by Luciano Burti in Silverstone and presented to the press twenty days later, on January 25, 2000, at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. Jaguar's first Formula 1 racing car was largely based on the Stewart SF3 . Contrary to many predictions, the 2000 season was a failure for Jaguar. The R1 was difficult to drive and the manual transmission proved unreliable. They were eliminated 13 times during the season, three times due to a gearbox defect and another three times due to other defects.

Eddie Irvine, who was runner-up in the previous year, scored only four points with fourth place in Monaco and sixth in Malaysia and was 13th at the end of the season. Teammate Johnny Herbert could not score any points and finished 17th, his best racing position was two seventh places in Austria and Japan . Luciano Burti, who replaced Irvine in Austria, was only eleventh in this race and was also unable to score any points.

As a result, the team only achieved ninth place in the constructors' championship and was only ahead of the Minardi and Prost teams without points .

Painting and sponsorship

The basic color of the Jaguar R1 was British Racing Green , a dark green. The front and rear wings were kept in white, from the nose over the side boxes to the rear, the lower part of the car is also painted white; A small red stripe separates the two colors. The bargeboards , on the other hand, remained green and thus one color, the rims were kept gold. The original plan was to keep the entire car in dark green, but it was feared that this color scheme could often be overlooked in television broadcasts.

A hissing jaguar rises up all over the airbox as a self-promotion in profile, the contours of which were highlighted in white and otherwise remained transparent. The Jaguar logo was placed on the tip of the nose. The main sponsor was HSBC , a major British bank; Its logo was positioned on the side of the front wing, the side boxes and on the rear wing.

The German Beck’s brewery , the American computer and printer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard , the American automotive supplier Lear and the American telecommunications company MCI WorldCom also advertised on the vehicle 's nose . The German clothing company s.Oliver advertised on the back of the driver's mirror .

Other visible sponsors on the car were Bridgestone , DHL , Texaco and Visteon .

driver

Vice World Champion Eddie Irvine was signed up to drive the R1, while Johnny Herbert was taken over by the previous Stewart team. Test and reserve drivers were Dario Franchitti and Luciano Burti . Burti made his debut at the Austrian Grand Prix when he replaced the sick Irvine from qualifying.

The Jaguar R1 was the last Formula 1 racing car that Johnny Herbert drove as he ended his active Formula 1 career at the end of the season.

Further use of the chassis

A Jaguar R1, driven by Eddie Irvine, is on display at the British Motor Museum and the Donington Grand Prix Collection , respectively . Another Jaguar used by Eddie Irvine with the chassis number R1-07 , which was used in the Monaco Grand Prix , is exhibited in the Daimler-Jaguar Heritage Trust museum.

Others

At the end of the 2000 season, the then Formula 3 drivers Narain Karthikeyan and Tomas Scheckter as well as André Lotterer were given the opportunity to test drive the Jaguar R1
