The Jaguar R3 was the Formula 1 - racing cars from Jaguar for the Formula 1 2002 season . The vehicle was presented to the public on January 4, 2002. The successor to the car for the 2003 season was the Jaguar R4 .

technology

The vehicle was developed by Steve Nichols and Malcolm Oastler and suffered from relatively poor aerodynamics, which among other things resulted in insufficient contact pressure . The reasons for this were possibly time pressure and incorrect calculations after the wind tunnel measurements.

The R3 was powered by a Ford Cosworth CR3 V10 engine. In the configuration from 2002 it developed 850 hp at 18,300 rpm, had a cylinder bank angle of 72 ° and weighed 96 kg. The performance of the engine was far behind that of most of the competition.

Jaguar used a seven-speed sequential transmission it had developed. The gasoline was supplied by Castrol , the tires by Michelin .

Painting and sponsorship

The basic color of the R3 was green ( British Racing Green ). In addition to the main sponsor HSBC , which made almost the entire side of the vehicle and wing shine in white, the beer brand Beck’s , gasoline supplier Castrol , DuPont , eds , AT&T , hp and Lear also advertised on the car.

driver

As in the previous season, the R3 drivers were Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa . Test and reserve drivers were James Courtney and André Lotterer . De la Rosa failed to score in his last full season, which is why his contract was not renewed at the end of the season and he switched to McLaren as a test driver. Irvine drove his last season as an active racing driver and ended his career with third place in Monza and eight points in the overall standings.

2002 season

After the disappointing seasons of 2000 and 2001, Jaguar did not look up in 2002 either. The team confessed in the middle of the season that they had made many mistakes in development. After an impressive fourth place in the opening race in Australia, the unreliability and poor performance of the car became increasingly apparent. Continuous further development led to significant improvements at the end of the season, however, with Irvine achieving a podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza with third place. In total, however, there were only three finishings in the points and 19 cancellations, most of which were due to technical reasons. Jaguar achieved seventh place with eight points in the constructors' championship.
