The Arrows A23 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Arrows for the 2002 season . It was the last car from Arrows before the team went bankrupt in the middle of the season and had to stop racing.

General

After last year's cars, which were equipped with Supertec or Asiatech engines and were able to achieve successes in the form of results in the top six as well as long battles with top-class cars, the aerodynamically favorable A23 should achieve the first victory around the financially troubled team to rescue. That failed, and in the middle of the season Arrows went bankrupt when main sponsor Orange stopped making payments.

Sponsors and liveries

The basic color of the vehicle was orange. Part of the side pods, the nose side, the air scoop and the rear wing were black. The main sponsor orange plc was advertised on almost the entire car. Red Bull (introduced by Bernoldi ) also advertised "Lost Boys" on the air scoop and on the tip of the nose of the vehicle.

technology

The British aerodynamicist Mike Coughlan drew the first drafts of the car. The A23 was powered by a Cosworth V10 CR 3 engine with a cylinder bank angle of 72 °. The gasoline came from Total or Elf . The sequential six-speed transmission was an in-house development by Arrows. The tires were sourced from Bridgestone for Arrows .

2002 season

Contrary to all hopes, the car turned out to be not very competitive. Nevertheless, Frentzen managed to get into the points twice. Bernoldi didn't score and was eliminated very often. At the French Grand Prix, the team purposely failed to qualify so as not to have to start. You couldn't raise enough financial resources to participate in the race. After the German Grand Prix it was finally over and Arrows left the Hockenheimring with a double retirement. It was the last race for the team, which then had to stop racing due to financial difficulties.

Further use of the chassis

At the beginning of 2003, Minardi's team boss Paul Stoddart bought five Arrows A23 chassis. After minor modifications, two chassis under the designation Minardi PS04 were tested by Nicolas Kiesa . Unlike originally planned, these cars were ultimately not used in the 2004 season . Minardi decided to use its own PS04B construction , which had no reference to the Arrows chassis.

In 2005 the Japanese racing team Super Aguri took over some A23 chassis. The team brought them to the start in a revised form in the 2006 season as Super Aguri SA05 .
