Reports

background

Toyota competed in Formula 1 for the first time at the Australian Grand Prix. The Benetton team was taken over by Renault , who competed as a works team in Formula 1 for the first time since 1985 .

With Michael Schumacher (twice), David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine (once each), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

Felipe Massa , Allan McNish , Takuma Satō and Mark Webber made their Formula 1 debut. Mika Salo returned to Formula 1 after a year-long hiatus for Toyota.

training

On Friday, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap time ahead of his Ferrari team- mate Rubens Barrichello and his brother Ralf Schumacher . In the Saturday training sessions, Michael Schumacher again took the lead ahead of Barrichello. Third was Juan Pablo Montoya .

Qualifying

Qualifying started under dry conditions. First, qualifying was canceled to recover the racing car from debutant Sato, which had broken down. Then it started to rain, so that most of the drivers only achieved one fastest lap. Barrichello achieved pole position ahead of Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf. The Brazilian was only 5 thousandths of a second faster than his team mate. Satō, who could only show one time in the wet, was admitted to the race , although he had failed to meet the 107 percent rule .

Warm up

The warm-up on Sunday morning took place under wet conditions. Michael Schumacher achieved the fastest lap ahead of his team-mate Barrichello. David Coulthard took third place.

run

Second-placed Michael Schumacher did not have such a good start compared to his brother and Barrichello and therefore there was a duel between Ralf Schumacher and the leading Barrichello before the first corner. Ralf Schumacher drove close to Barrichello and finally collided with the Ferrari driver. He took off and flew over Barrichello into the run-off zone. In addition to the two drivers, Fisichella , Massa, Heidfeld , Button , Panis and McNish were eliminated in the first corner. Kimi Raikkonen was also involved in the start-up accident, but he was able to continue. His team-mate Coulthard finally took the lead from Jarno Trulli . Michael Schumacher was fourth behind Montoya.

The race was not interrupted, but the safety car came onto the track. After restarting the race, Trulli retired on lap eight. In the further course there were some changes in leadership: Michael Schumacher took the lead in the eleventh lap and handed it over to Montoya one lap later. On the 17th lap, Schumacher took the lead again and held it until the end of the race.

The Jordan team, whose pilot Satō had suffered an electrical damage, had to complain about another failure . In addition, Jacques Villeneuve retired with an accident after a rear wing fracture and Coulthard with a gearbox failure. The Arrows pilots who started from the pit lane were both disqualified in the early stages of the Grand Prix. Enrique Bernoldi , because he changed the car too late, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen , because he drove out of the pit lane when he was red.

In the end, eight pilots, of which the first three were in the lead lap, reached the finish. Michael Schumacher won the race ahead of Montoya and Raikkonen. Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine finished fourth. In the last few laps there was a duel for fifth place between Webber and Salo. Webber managed to defend his position and in the first race, which was also his home Grand Prix , he scored the first points in Formula 1 for Minardi . Salo in the TF102, on the other hand, scored the first point for Toyota in sixth place.
