run
At the start Michael Schumacher kept the lead. His team-mate Rubens Barrichello, however, lost four places. Mika Häkkinen was second after the first lap ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher. Gaston Mazzacane did not finish the first lap, his Prost had braking problems. Rubens Barrichello put a lot of pressure on Ralf Schumacher and passed him on the second lap. David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli also passed Ralf Schumacher. Barrichello then quickly caught up with Frentzen and started to overtake before Turn 9. The two vehicles touched and came off the track, but remained undamaged. Barrichello lost little time, but Heinz Harald Frentzen spun and was able to continue the race in 16th position. In the meantime, Enrique Bernoldi (accident) and Tarso Marques (battery defect) were eliminated.
On lap 4 there was a collision between Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. Before Turn 3, Villeneuve braked later than Ralf Schumacher in front of him and drove him into the rear at around 280 km / h, Villeneuve's car lifted off and hit the wall. Both drivers were uninjured. In the accident, however, a 52-year-old marshal was killed when the right rear wheel of Villeneuves BAR flew through an opening in the fence. Seven spectators were also injured by debris flying around. The safety car was immediately sent out to lead the field safely past the danger zone.
After eleven laps behind the safety car, the race was restarted. Michael Schumacher stayed ahead of Häkkinen and the two separated a little from third-placed Barrichello. Shortly after the restart, Jenson Button served his stop-and-go penalty . With him, the mechanics were on the car too long before it started on the grid. In the back field, Heinz-Harald Frentzen worked his way forward. He benefited from a pit stop by Jos Verstappen and the penalty from Button. Frentzen also overtook Giancarlo Fisichella , who was however very slow at the time.
On lap 25, Mika Häkkinen retired due to a broken suspension. Rubens Barrichello was second and was ten seconds behind his team-mate. Third was David Coulthard followed by Jarno Trulli, Olivier Panis and Nick Heidfeld.
Schumacher drove faster than Barrichello on almost every lap and increased his lead to 15 seconds. On lap 36, David Coulthard overtook Rubens Barrichello, who was lying in front of him, by first sitting to the left of the Brazilian in a right-hand bend and staying on the outside line, only to have the shorter path inside in the following bend. Two laps after this maneuver, Michael Schumacher pitted 15 seconds ahead of Coulthard. As a result, he fell back to third place. Two laps later, Barrichello made his pit stop and had to give up the position he had won. In the meantime, Jarno Trulli had to give up the race because his Jordan Honda misfired.
David Coulthard drove the fastest times after the Ferrari pit stop because his McLaren was lighter than the Ferrari. With a lead of 18.2 seconds over Michael Schumacher, the Scot pitted on lap 40. This was not enough time to keep the lead. He fell back to second position, ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Montoya had to park his Williams BMW with an engine failure.
After lap 44 Michael Schumacher was leading ahead of David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Olivier Panis, Nick Heidfeld and Heinz Harald Frentzen. In the final laps, David Coulthard drove faster than Michael Schumacher and was able to catch up. Heinz Harald Frentzen also caught up with Nick Heidfeld, who was driving in front of him, but who withstood the pressure until the end of the race.
With six laps to go, Jenson Button had to end the race early due to an electrical fault. However, he was rated 14th.
Finally, Michael Schumacher crossed the line ahead of David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. Olivier Panis was the last to get points, followed by Nick Heidfeld and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Panis received a subsequent time penalty of 25 seconds after the race and fell back to seventh place. So Kimi Raikkonen got a point in his first race.
