The 2001 German Grand Prix took place on July 29th at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim and was the twelfth race of the 2001 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the British Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 37 points from David Coulthard and 50 points from Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 52 points from McLaren-Mercedes and 72 points from Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher, Barrichello, Mika Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine (once each), four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen was dismissed by Jordan and replaced by Ricardo Zonta .
It was the last Formula 1 race that was held on the "old" Hockenheimring before the track was replaced by a shortened version from 2002.
training
In the first free practice, Irvine drove the fastest lap. He was followed by Juan Pablo Montoya and Häkkinen. In the second free practice, Ralf Schumacher set the fastest time, followed by Montoya and Michael Schumacher.
Qualifying
In qualifying, the Williams drivers again set the fastest times, this time in reverse order. It was Montoya's first pole position of his Formula 1 career and also the first for a driver from Colombia. Behind Ralf Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen was third fastest.
Warm-up
The Williams drivers were also right at the front in the warm-up. Ralf Schumacher drove faster than Montoya, followed by Coulthard.
run
Before the start, the Minardis had problems with their car, at Tarso Marques the fuel pressure was too low, and the engine was smoking heavily. As a result, Fernando Alonso and Tarso Marques had to start out of the pit lane, which was no longer a disadvantage in view of the start.
First start
At the start of the race, Michael Schumacher's Ferrari did not accelerate well and was overtaken by several drivers. Luciano Burti was no longer able to avoid the Ferrari and drove him into the rear. Burtis Prost rose and rolled over. On landing he met Enrique Bernoldis Arrows and only came to a stop at the track barrier. A Burtis tire came off and hit the Arrows, a few centimeters from Bernoldi's helmet. The process was strongly reminiscent of the fatal accident of Markus Höttinger , who was killed in exactly the same place in a Formula 2 race 21 years earlier by a flying wheel, which also came loose in a rear-end collision. The right rear suspension of Schumacher's Ferrari was damaged and he also lost the rear wing. The race was stopped due to this accident and later restarted with the same number of laps. The Minardi drivers Tarso Marques and Fernando Alonso started from the pit lane at the first start. For the second start they took up their original starting positions again.
Meanwhile, a Jaguar employee was easily injured while working and had to be taken care of by first aiders.
Second start
Since replacement vehicles were allowed this season, Burti and Schumacher also took part in this start.
At the second start, all drivers got off well. Montoya defended his lead and stayed ahead of his teammate. Michael Schumacher placed himself in third place. In midfield there was a collision between Nick Heidfeld and Pedro de la Rosa , which meant that both drivers were eliminated. De la Rosa had braked himself when approaching the first chicane and drove Heidfeld into his car. In the first lap, however, Barrichello and Coulthard fought for position five, Barrichello prevailed.
After the first lap, Montoya was ahead of Ralf and Michael Schumacher, Häkkinen, Barrichello and Coulthard.
Barrichello drove faster than Häkkinen and at the end of the second lap had driven close to the McLaren drivers. On the third lap, Barrichello overtook him on the outside and was a new fourth. Meanwhile, the field at the front drew apart, only Barrichello caught up with Michael Schumacher and overtook him shortly afterwards without a fight. There was some fights for positions behind. Ricardo Zonta collided with Jos Verstappen's vehicle and lost the front wing, while Verstappen suffered a puncture. Both then had to make a pit stop, and Zonta had to park the car a little later. At the front of the field, Barrichello was the fastest and caught up with Ralf Schumacher.
In midfield there was another fight between Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli . Panis overtook Trulli, but went off the ideal line and had to shorten a chicane. Trulli lost control of his vehicle while attempting to counter, and spun, losing a few places.
On the twelfth lap, the first drivers started the pit stops. Meanwhile, Mika Häkkinen had a technical defect and had to park his vehicle. On lap 15, Barrichello, the first driver of the leading group, went to his pit stop, which indicated a two-stop strategy.
Shortly afterwards there were two more failures: Kimi Räikkönen and Eddie Irvine parked their vehicles in the pit lane.
After his pit stop, Barrichello was fast again and caught up with David Coulthard. A few laps later he was right behind Coulthard and overtook him at the entrance of the Motodrom.
The leader Montoya made his only stop on lap 21. The tank system was not working properly and you had to switch to the replacement system. This cost Montoya a lot of time, so that he came out of the pit lane behind Barrichello. Michael Schumacher also made his stop one lap later, which went without any problems. Schumacher came back on the track behind Barrichello. When accelerating out of the pit exit, however, he had a technical defect and had to park his Ferrari on the edge of the lane.
Ralf Schumacher came to his pit stop. This time there were no problems with the Williams team, so Ralf Schumacher kept the lead.
After his bad pit stop, Montoya had to park his vehicle completely shortly afterwards because it had a defect. This was not the last technical defect on a racing car from the leading group: David Coulthard suffered an engine failure after his pit stop.
Barrichello made his second stop on lap 31. He also had problems with the tank system and lost a lot of time. However, since he was about a minute ahead of Jacques Villeneuve before the stop , he kept second position.
After the pit stops, Ralf Schumacher was now in front of Barrichello, Villeneuve, Giancarlo Fisichella , Jenson Button and Jean Alesi .
By the end of the race nothing changed in this order and Ralf Schumacher celebrated the third victory of his Formula 1 career. For Jacques Villeneuve it was the last podium finish in his Formula 1 career.
