Reports
background
After the Austrian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of David Coulthard and with 24 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello . Ferrari led in the constructors' championship with 18 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 42 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher (four times), Olivier Panis , Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time in the first free practice. He was 0.463 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher, the third fastest was Ralf Schumacher , who was already more than a second behind. In the second free practice, the order of the first three did not change. However, the distances between the drivers had shortened. Michael Schumacher was now 0.174 seconds off Häkkinen, Ralf Schumacher 0.443 seconds.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Coulthard secured pole position with a time of 1: 17.430 minutes . Michael Schumacher placed second, 0,201 seconds behind, followed by Häkkinen.
Warm up
In the warm-up, the two McLaren drivers drove the fastest times - Coulthard drove the faster time than Häkkinen. Michael Schumacher was third fastest.
run
Coulthard, starting from pole position, stopped at the start of the warm-up lap. However, his mechanics managed to restart his car quickly so that he could follow the field. However, he was not allowed to take his original starting position again, so he started from the last position.
The start then went smoothly for all drivers. Juan Pablo Montoya overtook Eddie Irvine in the first corner and was the only one of the top six to make up a position.
On the first lap, Nick Heidfeld made a driving mistake and collided with the barrier, the race was over for him. After the first lap, Michael Schumacher led ahead of Häkkinen, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Montoya and Irvine. After the first lap, Coulthard was at the end of the field.
While Michael Schumacher began to break away from his pursuers, Irvine was unable to keep the pace of those in front of him. Montoya lost control of his racing car and drove into the guardrail, which meant his retirement.
On lap twelve, Häkkinen suddenly had problems with his McLaren. He drove very slowly and was overtaken by Barrichello. One lap later, Häkkinen pitted and had his monoposto checked by the mechanics. Although no repairs had been carried out, he left the pit lane again. Two laps later he came back in the pits, but now to give up the race. Two other drivers also had to come in for unscheduled pit stops: Panis finished his race, Kimi Räikkönen continued his race after a long stop several laps behind.
After 20 laps, Michael Schumacher continued to lead in front of his team-mate Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Irvine, Jarno Trulli and Jacques Villeneuve . At the end of the field Coulthard was behind Enrique Bernoldi . This stopped him for many laps without Coulthard having a chance to overtake. In lap 26, Michael Schumacher lapped the duo.
After lap 40, the first drivers began their planned pit stops. Bernoldi pitted on lap 44, so that Coulthard had a clear run. He implemented this immediately and drove the fastest lap of the race to date on the following lap. He quickly caught up with Fernando Alonso in front of him and overtook him on lap 47.
On lap 50 there was an accident at the fastest part of the track. Heinz-Harald Frentzen lost control of his car in the tunnel and collided with the guardrail on the side. Despite the high speed, he got out of his Jordan unharmed.
Michael Schumacher came into the pits on lap 54 and temporarily lost the lead to his team-mate Barrichello, who for his part had not yet made the pit stop. Ralf Schumacher pitted four laps later. For him, however, this meant the end of his race because he had problems with his vehicle for safety reasons. A lap later Barrichello made his only pit stop and Michael Schumacher took the lead again.
On lap 66, Coulthard was the last to complete his scheduled pit stop. Before his stop he had moved up to position six and thus in the points. Due to the lighter car, Coulthard drove many fast laps before his stop. The resulting lead over Jenson Button was enough to keep him in sixth position.
Jean Alesi , who was fifth after the pit stops, made another unscheduled pit stop eight laps before the end after touching the guardrail in order to have his vehicle checked for consequential damage. Alesi lost fifth place to Coulthard through this stop.
Michael Schumacher won after 1: 47: 22.561 hours ahead of Barrichello and Irvine. The remaining points went to Villeneuve, Coulthard and Alesi.
Michael Schumacher increased his lead in the world championship by eight points over Coulthard. With the one-two victory, Ferrari extended its lead by 14 points over McLaren-Mercedes.
