The 1992 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 31 and was the sixth race of the 1992 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The same drivers who had contested the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks earlier also competed in the sixth World Championship round of the year in Monaco.

training

Once again, the two Williams drivers secured the front row. However, the difference between the fastest lap time of pole setter Nigel Mansell and that of third-placed Ayrton Senna was, at around 1.1 seconds, significantly lower than on the previous race weekends. Although Riccardo Patrese managed the second best time, he was so annoyed with Bertrand Gachot , who had stopped him during one of his fastest laps, that the two almost got into a fight in the pit lane. Jean Alesi qualified for fourth place on the grid in front of Gerhard Berger and the two Benetton drivers Michael Schumacher and Martin Brundle .

During the training session on Saturday, Pierluigi Martini had such a serious accident in the tunnel that the subsequent repair of the guard rails took around 40 minutes. In the warm-up on Sunday morning accident Aguri Suzuki heavy. After an examination at the hospital, he was nevertheless given clearance to take part in the race.

run

Mansell took the lead from pole position. Patreses attempt to avoid an impending collision with his teammate enabled Senna to take second place. Schumacher initially overtook Berger and Alesi, but the Ferrari driver successfully countered in the Mirabeau curve.

While Mansell was gaining a head start, Patrese, despite his equally superior car, was unable to overtake Senna. The duel for fourth place between Alesi and Schumacher ended in the twelfth round with a collision in the Loews - hairpin that few rounds, a result later that the Frenchman had to retire. When Berger retired on lap 32 due to a gearbox failure, Ivan Capelli took fifth place ahead of Michele Alboreto . This spun on lap 60. Senna, who was about to lap it, was just able to avoid a collision with the vehicle standing sideways, but lost around 10 seconds as a result. Capelli's race ended prematurely on lap 61 due to a driving error in the Rascasse section .

Due to a loosened wheel nut, Mansell drove to the pits on the 71st lap. After the problem was resolved, he returned around five seconds behind the now leading Senna. Since his Williams FW14B was significantly more competitive than Senna's McLaren MP4 / 7A and he now had fresh tires, it didn't take long before he caught up with it. During the last laps of the race, he tried to overtake Senna in several places, but the latter prevented this by skillful resistance.

Senna won just ahead of Mansell. Patrese followed a little behind Schumacher, Brundle and Gachot.

After six races, Mansell had already scored twice as many championship points as his first rival in the world championship, his team-mate Patrese.
