The 1971 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 23rd at the Circuit de Monaco and was the third race of the 1971 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

Five weeks lay between the Spanish Grand Prix and the third round of the World Championship in Monaco, the 200th Grand Prix in Formula 1 history. During this break, a non-World Championship race had taken place at Silverstone , which was held in two runs. Jackie Stewart was victorious in the first run , Graham Hill won the second . In both cases, V8-powered vehicles were at the top, which relativized the V12 dominance that was threatening after the previous season.

At Ferrari , the two regular drivers Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni competed in Monaco with the car that had been further developed into the Ferrari 312B2 under the direction of chief designer Mauro Forghieri , while a conventional 312B was reported for the third works driver, Mario Andretti . Instead of Andrea de Adamich, Nanni Galli drove the third works March with an Alfa Romeo engine. Skip Barber also wanted to make his Grand Prix debut in a private March 711, but clearly failed to qualify. Otherwise there were no significant changes in terms of teams and drivers compared to the previous World Championship run.

training

For the first time since 1955 , the limitation to a maximum of 16 starters, which was then introduced for safety reasons, was lifted or increased to 18 drivers in Monaco. In addition, at the beginning of the season, the regulation of the so-called "seeded" drivers, who definitely got a starting place, was abolished. Before the training, all drivers were classified as equivalent, regardless of whether they were world champions, works drivers or guest starters. The first to suffer from this new regulation was Mario Andretti , who had previously been second in the world championship standings , and who was unable to qualify among the top 18 drivers due to a defect in his car.

Since the first training session on Thursday was completely rainy and there was hardly any time improvement on Saturday due to the damp track conditions, the times achieved on Friday largely determined the starting grid.

Stewart achieved pole position with a lap time 1.2 seconds faster than second-placed Jacky Ickx . The two BRM drivers Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodríguez also presented themselves well in the BRM P160 with starting positions three and five, while the third works driver Howden Ganley with the significantly older BRM P153 could not qualify.

The reigning constructors' world championship team Lotus disappointed with starting positions 12 for Reine Wisell and 17 for Emerson Fittipaldi .

run

Race course

After the start, Stewart, Ickx and Siffert almost simultaneously reached the first corner that three cars could not pass through side by side. Siffert managed to overtake the Ferrari and take second place behind Stewart. Graham Hill , who was an absolute Monaco specialist with five wins on this track, retired on the second lap due to a driving error in the Tabac corner. His team-mate Tim Schenken also touched the barrier two laps later when he suddenly had to avoid François Cevert, who was driving slowly due to technical problems . Initially both drivers were able to continue the race, but Cevert retired after another two laps due to a driving error as a result of the defect.

While Stewart gradually increased his lead at the front, Ronnie Peterson drove a strong race that ended with an excellent second place for him. Since Siffert retired with engine failure in the last third of the race, Denis Hulme was fourth behind Jacky Ickx.
