The 1971 German Grand Prix took place on August 1st at the Nürburgring and was the seventh race of the 1971 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
After protests from the drivers in the previous year, the Nürburgring was equipped with crash barriers and a new road surface in the winter of 1970/71. In addition, some curves and jumps have been defused. Thanks to the improved safety, Formula 1 returned after a year of abstinence. In 1970 the German Grand Prix took place for the first time at the Hockenheimring .
Jacky Ickx , who was a big fan of the original route, reacted with horror to the renovation, as in his opinion the route had been transformed into a “ Champs-Élysées through the Eifel”.
The race distance was shortened once to twelve laps. In the following years, however, they returned to the number of 14 laps that was usual before the conversion.
Pedro Rodríguez , who died in an accident on July 11th, was replaced in the BRM works team by Vic Elford , who thus had his only Grand Prix participation this season, which was also his last overall.
Matra factory driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise was missing because his license was temporarily withdrawn again because of complicity in Ignazio Giunti's fatal accident . For the same reason, he had already missed the first World Cup run of the season in South Africa .
After two Grand Prix, in which he was unable to take part due to obligations in the USAC racing series, Mario Andretti now drove a third Ferrari again .
training
The training sessions took place under changing weather conditions. Jackie Stewart secured pole position ahead of Jacky Ickx .
Both Joakim Bonnier and Formula 1 newcomer Helmut Marko failed to qualify with the McLaren M7C, which was reported by Bonnier's private team , as the vehicle failed in one of the first training laps due to lack of fuel.
run
Reine Wisell's engine failed at the start due to insufficient fuel pressure , so that he could only start the race after a short delay and drive behind the field. The same applied to Graham Hill , who was prevented from starting immediately after a damage to the accelerator pedal. In his case, the necessary repair took about three minutes.
In front of an enormous crowd of spectators along the approximately 22.8 kilometer long racetrack, Ickx initially took the lead, but was overtaken by Stewart on the first lap, who did not relinquish the lead as the race continued.
In the second lap, Ickx spun in the Wippermann section . His team-mate Clay Regazzoni , who followed immediately, had to swerve and suddenly came off the track. Overtaken by Siffert, in contrast to Ickx, he was able to continue the race in third position, while Stewart had further increased his lead at the front due to the incident.
In the course of the following laps, François Cevert managed to fight his way up to second place. In the course of this he overtook Andretti, Peterson , Siffert and Regazzoni.
Mike Beuttler was disqualified because he took an illegal route to the pits after a puncture.
Jackie Stewart won the race confidently. His team mate François Cevert completed a Tyrrell one-two.
Registration list
1 The Tyrrell 001 marked with a "T" behind the start number was available to Jackie Stewart as a T-Car , but was never used.
2 The number 27 McLaren M7C of Joakim Bonnier's private team was entered for both himself and Helmut Marko. However, neither driver was able to qualify with it.
