The 1953 German Grand Prix took place on August 2nd at the Nürburgring and was the seventh of nine races in the 1953 World Cup .
background
Before the start, Ascari's title defense was almost certain. By then he had reached 33.5 of the 36 possible points according to the regulations during the season. Only Hawthorn and Fangio had a minimal chance of winning the title, should they win all the remaining races and drive the fastest lap, but Ascari scored a maximum of one point (and Fangio no points), Hawthorn would be 35 and Fangio 34 points come and could have surpassed him.
José Froilán González had been injured in a sports car race in Lisbon the week before and was out for the rest of the season. Although he was still on the entry list, the Maserati team only entered three drivers ( Fangio , Marimón and Bonetto ). Ferrari was represented with its regular drivers Ascari, Farina , Villoresi and Fangio. In addition to the works teams from Connaught ( Bira , Salvadori , McAlpine ) and Gordini ( Trintignant , Behra , Schell ) numerous, mainly German private drivers filled the field. A total of 34 nominations were received, but this was not a problem given the length of the route.
training
In practice, only Ascari achieved a lap time of less than 10 minutes and thus secured pole position in front of Fangio, Farina and Hawthorn. Trintignant was able to leave a Maserati and a Ferrari behind and took fifth place on the grid in the second row. His time was already 22 seconds slower than Ascari's, the last timed participant, Wolfgang Seidel in Veritas , needed almost 3 minutes more than Ascari.
run
Fangio won the start, but Ascari was able to overtake him in the course of the first lap and finish it with a lead of 10 seconds on the field of pursuers. Second, Fangio was attacked by Hawthorn. The two then fought a duel, in which sometimes one, sometimes the other, was ahead, but at the end of a round always Hawthorn. The race seemed to be developing into a solo drive by Ascari that had often been seen in the past, when he drove into the pits on lap five on just three wheels. He had lost a bike. Since he couldn't brake well on the three wheels, he only came to a stop behind his pits. It took him 4 minutes to push back and repair. Hawthorn was ahead now, Fangio still close behind. Through the duel between the two, Farina was able to catch up with them and overtake both during the 8th lap. Fangio also managed to get past Hawthorn on this lap. This order remained unchanged until the finish. It was Farina's fifth and final victory in a world championship run. Ascari was able to make up four places after his repair, but his car was in poor condition after the repair and so he swapped it for Villoresi's car at the end of the ninth lap. With this car he drove the fastest lap (9: 56.0 minutes), but on lap 15 he had to park it at the pits with an engine failure. Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate his title defense at the end of the race, as none of his remaining rivals had won the race.
