A. Jeff McLemore

Atkins Jefferson "Jeff" McLemore (born March 13, 1857 in Spring Hill , Tennessee , †  March 4, 1929 in Laredo , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1919 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jeff McLemore attended both public and private schools. In 1878 he moved to Texas, where he worked as a cowboy and newspaper reporter. He later worked in the mining industry in Colorado and Mexico . He then worked in the newspaper industry in San Antonio . In the following years he was a newspaper publisher in the cities of Corpus Christi , Austin and Houston . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1892 and 1896 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Texas ; from 1896 to 1898 he was a member of the Austin City Council.

From 1900 to 1904, McLemore served as secretary for the Texas Democratic Party. In the 1914 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th electoral district of Texas , where he succeeded Hatton W. Sumners on March 4, 1915 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1919 . These were shaped by the events of the First World War . In 1918 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, McLemore returned to working in the newspaper industry. In 1928 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . He died in Laredo on March 4, 1929 and was buried in Austin.
