William "Bill" Sarpalius (born January 10, 1948 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill Sarpalius grew up in Houston and on the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch near Amarillo . In 1967 and 1968 he headed the Texas Future Farmers of America Association , a young farmers' organization. Until 1970 he attended Clarendon College . He then studied at Texas Tech University until 1972 . He then worked from 1972 to 1978 in administration and as a teacher at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch . He also studied at West Texas State University until 1978 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1981 to 1989 he was a member of the Texas Senate .

In the 1988 congressional elections , Sarpalius was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Beau Boulter on January 3, 1989 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . In 1994 he was defeated by Republican Mac Thornberry . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Sarpalius worked for the Federal Department of Agriculture for a few years. Today he runs a consulting firm in Washington.
