Raymond Eugene "Gene" Green (born October 17, 1947 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1993 to 2019 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives

Career

Gene Green studied at the University of Houston until 1971 . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1977, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1973 and 1985 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives ; from 1985 to 1993 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1992 election , Green was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the then newly created 29th  Congressional constituency of Texas . The district includes the eastern part of the city of Houston and its suburbs. He took up his mandate on January 3, 1993 and was re-elected, most recently in 2016 . Green was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and four sub-committees. Between 2007 and 2009 he was Chairman of the Committee on Standards of Official Conducts , most recently he was responsible for health policy in the Committee on Energy and Trade. In November 2017, he announced that he would not stand for re- election in the 2018 election, but would withdraw from politics for private reasons. His mandate ended on January 3, 2019. His successor in the House of Representatives was the Democrat Sylvia Garcia , who Houston is the first Latina to represent.

Green is married and lives privately in Houston.
