Brian Babin (born March 23, 1948 in Port Arthur , Texas ) is an American politician . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1966, Brian Babin graduated from Forest Park High School in Beaumont . This was followed by studies at Lamar University in Beaumont until 1973 . He graduated from the University of Texas at Houston with a degree in dentistry in 1976 . He then served in the United States Air Force until 1979 . He was also a member of the Texas National Guard. After his military service, he practiced as a dentist. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1981 and 1982 and again between 1984 and 1989 he sat on the Woodville City Council in Tyler County . In between he was mayor of this town from 1982 to 1984. From time to time in the 1990s he was also a member of the school committee. Between 1989 and 1995 he was a member of his state's Texas Historical Commission . In 1996 and 1998 he ran unsuccessfully for the Congress . From 1999 to 2014 he was a member of the Lower Neches Valley Authority .

In the 2014 congressional election , Babin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 36th constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Steve Stockman , who ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate , on January 3, 2015 . He won with 76:22 percent of the vote against the Democrat Michael Cole. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he also served in the 115th United States Congress . He was re-elected in 2018. His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2021 with the option of a further candidacy in 2020. In Congress, Babin is or was a member of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, as well as a total of five sub-committees.
