Ronald Jack "Ron" Wright (* 8. April 1953 in Cherokee County , Texas ; † 7. February 2021 in Dallas , Texas) was an American politician of the Republican Party . He was a member of the United States House of Representatives for the sixth congressional electoral district of Texas from January 2019 . Previously he was on the Arlington, Texas City Council .

Life

Ron Wright came from a long-established Tarrant County family. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington . He worked in various branches of the private sector, most recently as a project manager for a company that builds cooling towers .

Wright was married with three children and the family lives in Arlington. He died of COVID-19 in February 2021 , making him the first Congressman to die of complications from the viral disease during his tenure.

politics

Wright held various political functions at the local level. From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the City Council of Arlington and, most recently, Deputy Mayor. In 2011 he was appointed Tarrant County Tax Assessor Collector , an elected tax officer who, among other things, calculates and collects property tax. In 2012 and 2016, Wright was elected to office.

Wright also worked as a constituency representative for Congressman Joe Barton and his chief of staff in Washington from 2009 to 2011.

In the 2018 US House of Representatives election , Wright ran for the sixth district previously represented by Barton. Wright was the most successful of five candidates in the Republican primary with 45.1% of the vote and was confirmed in the runoff. In the general election, he won 53.1% of the vote against Jana Lynne Sanchez, the Democratic candidate who received 45.4%. He took up his mandate on January 3, 2019; in the elections to the US House of Representatives in 2020 , he was re-elected.
