Craig Anthony Washington (born October 12, 1941 in Longview , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Craig Washington studied at Prairie View A&M University until 1966 . This was followed by a law degree at the Law School of Texas Southern University until 1969 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1982 he was an MP in the Texas House of Representatives ; from 1983 to 1989 he was a member of the State Senate . After the death of MP Mickey Leland , Washington was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election for the 18th seat of Texaselected, where he took up his new mandate on December 9, 1989. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1995 . In 1994 he missed his party's nomination for re-election.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives ended, Washington practiced as a lawyer. He made headlines on January 1, 2008 when he shot a vehicle carrying two teenagers. For this he was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence in 2009. In addition, he came into conflict with the tax authorities, who accused him of tax debts of $ 610,000.
