James Albon "Jim" Mattox (born August 29, 1943 in Dallas , Texas , †  November 20, 2008 in Dripping Springs , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1983 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Mattox attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas until 1961 and then studied at Baylor University in Waco until 1965 . After completing a law degree at Southern Methodist University and being admitted to the bar in 1968, he began to work in this profession. From 1968 to 1970 he was the assistant district attorney in Dallas County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1977 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives . In 1984, 1988 and 1992 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the 1976 congressional elections , Mattox was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Republican Alan Steelman on January 3, 1977 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . In 1982 he renounced another candidacy. In 1983, he was charged with corruption but was acquitted after a long process.

Between 1983 and 1991, Mattox served as the Texas Attorney General . In 1990 he ran unsuccessfully for governor . Four years later he failed in an attempt to win his party's nomination for the US Senate elections; In 1998, he also unsuccessfully applied for a return to the office of Attorney General of Texas. He died on November 20, 2008 in Dripping Springs.
